Those Amazing WWII Warbirds

I thought it would be interesting and entertaining to have a place for everyone to show and tell their WWII warbirds. Please open your post with the plane manufacture and size. (Example: Top Flight 60 size P-51 with a 10cc Evolution gas engine) If you like, add your choice of radio, retracts, or other installed equipment. Let us know the history of your plane. (Example: Friends old plane, attic or hanger find, or your new build, or rebuild) If you have a video of your plane, please share it to. If you are building a plane, please do not turn this discussion into a build log, but please provide a link to your build log, and post photos from time to time to keep everyone up on your progress, so cook some popcorn, and sit down and enjoy.

An old flying friend gave a couple of 60 size TF P-51s to maser. These planes are most likely 15 or so years old. Maser gave one to me, and we decided to outfit them with small cc gas engines. I will be putting an Evolution 10cc gas on mine, which is the blue and silver, yellow nose one.

TF 60 Size P-51

The one maser gave me has no engine, and has no retracts installed. I have a set of Robarts I plan to install later, but first have a short cut to get it into the air.

A few years ago, another friend from a local museum gave me another 60 size TF P-51, with a Fox engine. I actually forgot I had it until I was digging around in my hanger and found it stuffed in a corner. Both need minor work on the airframes, but combined, I can make one. This plane has the wire fixed gear.

H9 Hellcat ARF 65" ws, Magnum .91 two stroke

Got this H9 Hellcat for my birthday in 2008. Pretty much a stock build. Flew well. After 500+ flights, I total it in a cross-wind landing in 2017. Picture of it in 2015.

TF 60 Size P-51s

Plan of Attack: I am going to fit the fixed gear wing to the one yellow nose P-51 from maser. Once I get this one airborne, I will begin the repairs on the remaining wing and fuse, then swap the components back over to end up with 2 60 size TF P-51s. Never hurts to have a backup, especially if you fly like me

aghost, thanks for joining in. Good looking plane. Is it still flyable and/or repairable?

Here are 3 of mine ARTF. Just finishing up on engine and servo installation.
I have a Byron Corsair 86 in span with a Saito R3 90 for power, Top Flite GS Hellcat with a ZDZ 80 for power 86 in. span and a TF GS Zero with a EME 60 with electric start, 86 in. span.
All are glassed .
Thanks,
Fred

Fastandlow, thanks for sharing. Can you post some picks of the Saito R3 90 install. What's the weight of the F4U, and how does it perform? All the planes look great.

I have had at least 10 Byron Corsairs through the years. Most of them come out around 33 lbs RTF. Previous ones were powered by G 62 engines which work great in theses planes. These are fantastic flying Warbirds.

First 2 pics are of the radial install of the Corsair, Next 3 are of the ZDZ in the Hellcat and the last three are of the Zero.

Totalled, not worth trying to repair. I did purchase the newer H9 Hellcat ARF. Put in an OS-120 AX, Eflite retracts. The wing was warped out of the box. I fly with noticeable right turn aileron settings but it flies just fine for me. I doubt the Eflite retracts will do 500 flights as the mechanical ones did on my 2008 H9 Hellcat. Neither this version or H9's earlier version has flaps. Not really needed for landing.

Fastandlow, Nice install. Would like to hear it run.
aghost, I have been looking at some Hellcats lately, but I stumbled across an ARF of a old favorite fighter. I'll post here on it soon.

Edwin, the B-17 is my favorite bomber. If you have not yet, you should read a book an old friend wrote. He flew 35 missions in WWII in the B-17. The book is The Wrong Stuff, by Truman Smith.
