3D printed twin 21mm EDF F-15

I have learned a lot the last couple of weeks as I built my first two 3D printed micro jets: a sportjet and a FAM IAe 48.

I am having fun, so I am starting yet another 3D printed jet; this time a 21mm EDF twin F-15. Now, I know that I am being very ambitious here as this jet is a bit more complex and I will probably need a few iterations to get it right. My biggest worry is fan performance due to the long ducts and weight. The EDF system used is the same as the IAe 48 but this plane will need a minimum of 4 servos so I will be using the same receiver as on the sportjet with four micro servos.

This F-15 is based on an earlier design from many years ago for EPO. With two 56mm Hyperflows on 4S the original flew very well, with a top speed of 109mph. This one will be much smaller, with a wingspan of approximately 290mm (11.5") and it will surely not fly that fast! Anyway, as I said, this one is an ambitious project, but I hope to work out all the kinks and end up with a nice flying F-15. Wish me luck!

How high will it go?

LW PLA opens up so many doors. Where do you purchase 21mm fans.

yank and bank!!
That is truly impressive.

Care to share the STL's?

Hi Antslake

The fan is my own design and you can find it here as a complete unit or separately.

Thank you!

We are a long way away from that....if it works, I may post the files somewhere, but first, I need to work out all the kinks and test fly it.

I have now printed the aft half of the fuse and test fitted the fans.

The fan fit is good, but the parts feel a bit heavy to me as they are 15.5g for the front half and 25.2g for the aft half. They feel plenty strong, so I think that I may be able to adjust some print settings and lower that weight a bit. even if only a 20% or so, that is almost 10g in total. I will also print the wings using the same settings to see if on this plane it makes sense to go with the printed version instead of making them with wood, which is what I did on the other planes so far.

Success!

After a few tweaks to the slicer settings the new parts are significantly lighter than the first ones yet they still feel strong enough for flying. I've gone from 40.5g for the fuse parts to 21.7g. Almost a 50% reduction!
