Irvine 40 Diesel Revs

Presently getting used to a second-hand Irvine 40 diesel, and test-benching it before fitting it to a model. Getting 8800 RPM on a Graupner 11 X 8 - does that sound about right?

Possibly a presently-building Super 60 (design from the 1940's I think). But also have a nice OS40 4-stroke looking for a flying home, so I'm humming and hawing - and loving it!! Might hold off on the Irvine until I can get something that will make the exhaust smell a bit nicer - it's a sweet, dear old thing but aaarrggh!!!! that smell!!!!

You can go up a couple of prop sizes on the diesel, try a 13 x 6 or even 14 x 6

Yes, thanks for that. I must say that the idea of low revs on a big prop appeals, but I'm not sure where to draw the line..... I think I read somewhere that overpropping a diesel can make the conrod go external. All views on this would be welcome.

I have a PAW 35 swinging a "master airscrew" 12 X 7 and it seems to like it, genrally bigger props provide better flywheel, are more efficient at shifting air and give improved idling. The only time I have seen a broken con rod on a diesel was when a n00b tried using an electric start (ouch)
