I haven't tried it myself but Seriously Fun Models suggests Polyurathane.

The best way I have tried is to use WATER BASED polyurathane. I must be water based. Also take care not to get clear latex, it won't be as strong.
The WBP is just so easy to use you won't believe it. It's also very light. The water in the WBP evaporates so unlike epoxy the covering is lighter when hard, and hard it is. WBP dries hard and very clear.
I highly recomend this stuff.

Where's a good place to pick up fiberglass cloth? Local stores or online. I've tried Lowes and Home Depot but the bondo cloth there is too heavy for models.
