I love the Night Radian and the LED lights make it one the coolest night flying planes you can have. The only problem with the stock lighting system, is that it is mechanically controlled via on board push buttons. That means if you want to change the color, speed or pattern of the lights, you have to first land, change and then launch again. There has to be a better way and there is! Wingnut Tech has a replacement LED controller that allows complete control of the LED patterns from a separate channel on your radio. There's also some pretty cool features included.
The FT Night Radian LED Controller is designed to replace the original LED sequencer that came preinstalled in the FT Night Radian. The original controller was good, but all the LED strings were treated exactly the same. This new LED Controller addresses each string individually, left wing, right wing, nose, fuselage, and tail. This means more extravagant light shows, as well as lighting up parts of the plane differently. It also will allow you to switch between several new user-selectable LED “shows” right from your transmitter. It works best if you have a rotary knob that you can assign to the channel, but will work easily with a 3-position or even a 2-position switch. This unit also frees up your battery balance connector, since it is completely powered from your receiver’s 5-volt feed.
This new LED controller gives you the option of enabling navigation lights on your model for easier orientation when flying in low light or nighttime conditions. This mode turns the wingtips red and green, and also strobes the wingtips white, mimicking full-scale aircraft navigation lights.
This LED controller also includes an altitude sensor that will indicate how high the model is flying above ground level (AGL) by lighting up more wing LEDs as your altitude increases. Zero feet AGL has zero LEDs lit. 600 feet AGL has all the wing LEDs lit. It also provides a vertical speed indicator (variometer) that will cause the tail LEDs to remain white during level flight, but will change to green when climbing and red when descending, in varying intensity depending on your rate of climb/descent.
The controller costs $35 and is available right now.
