Sunset flight.

Weather cleared enough for a sunset flight.
Built this plane several years ago. EPP with
fiberglass spars. Embedded LEDs and rechecked
everything, then clear film laminated.

Updated batteries. 3300 4s 40C flight, and
1300 3s 40C for LEDs.

About 8 minutes mixed flying.

Tough bird.

FWIW.

Updated my old 2800 4s batteries to 3300 4s on larger flying wings.

Over time, they all lost a minute+. Normal, but hundreds of cycles on them.

Reworked the battery pods to fit, and maintained original CG position.

Very good upgrade, finally! More flight time and the larger
wings carry a few extra ounces, no problem.

This particular wing uses 12 volt LEDs, and they are powered from the balance plug
using + and 3 cell ground only....custom made from 4s balance plug extension!

I have not had a problem with balance charging batteries as some say.

TIP tip.

.
.
Tip tip....

IMHO, best to NOT see both red and
green wingtips at the same time
when flying in total darkness.
Human eye sees green as
closer and brighter.....

My current LED setup for
flying wings shown in picture.

Of course looking from the
right side you would see
green and no red.

Have fun!

2020 - Projects.... adding to the gallery

With travel fun on hold because of pandemic, RC projects are at the top of the activity list here.

Finished another project but too rainy here today to go fly..... doing some PhotoShop instead.

This picure shows a CTH Gladiator flying wing converted to tractor motor night flyer.

CTH no longer sells these larger EPP flying wings. Too bad. They were heavy lifters, and great glide...
perfect for adding some extra weight equipment for LOS night flying.

Cooler weather... take those night flying wings off the shelf...

Posting this pic because it shows why I
always use 'white headlights' and
'red tail lights'... perfect for visual
orientation, IMHO, since those lights
are similar to seeing a car on the
road at night.

I should add that my night flyers
are EPP foam, mostly between
60" and 83" wing spans, and
run on 4s or 5s batteries... plenty
of power to carry the extra weight.

Hot Glue releases with Isopropyl alcohol...

Hot Glue.

Weight on these big EPP night flyers is not a factor, always plan a few ounces added for LEDs and hot glue.

One TIP about hot glue. I use hot glue with EPP foam where I might want to remove/replace something later. Hot glue is good for tacking LED strips into a channel, gluing vertical (film laminated) stabilizer/tail fins into EPP foam wing, etc.

If you need to remove something that was hot glued into EPP foam just put a few drops or more of Isopropyl alcohol, or rubbing alcohol on the glue joint. Give it a few seconds or minutes and pry it loose.

The alcohol breaks the bond between hot glue and EPP, or other things such as servos, etc.

So, for certain areas I prefer to use hot glue instead of epoxy or super glue.

Have fun.... but don't use alcohol to clean your plane if hot glue was used somewhere, lol.

Finally made a sunset video of 'Project #9', shown in posts 6 and post 20.

Flies really nice with no yaw due to huge vertical tail.

The red tail lights get many comments... very good for dusk visual orientation.

Horton style flying wing, first sunset flight. (1 min 34 sec)
