The Corona Hawk - with Plans and Video

Last night after work I was bored. So I sketched out a quick chuck glider.

The wing is based on my replacement for the Ace foam wing, set up with a straight LE. For looks sake and ease of construction.

The tail is an inverted V.

The wing area and tail are roughly sized to be similar to a red hawk.

The fuse is just a profile of a hawk in flight.

Everything is 1/8" balsa except the tail, which is 1/16".

I sized it to 50% of the Ace wings so it would fit easily on a single sheet.

It's not quite done yet, but good enough to start posting.

I started by gluing the wing tips onto the main wing. These are made like this to keep the wing tip from warping so easily (cross grain, basically).

The root of the tailfeathers is beveled and they are joined at 100 degrees. I found that to be a good value with previous inverted V planes, so I just re-used it. It also gives a good ratio of horizontal vs. vertical projected areas.

The fuselage is two 1/8" sheets laminated together. They had to dry overnight.

Over lunch today I attached the tail to the fuselage. The 3 points touching the ground make it very easy to get the fuse properly trued using a square.

I also sanded an airfoil, then beveled and joined the roots of the wings. The dihedral was set using the tried and true TLAR method.

After work tonight I added the wings. The fuse/tail forms a tripod that is perpendicular to the table top, so all I needed to do was make sure the wing tips were equally above the table top and that would mean the wing/tail/fuse are properly oriented to one another.

Note that there IS a slight difference. This will let the model fly a large, stable circle when tossed.

After that glue cures I'll be balancing it and flying it in the house. It's a bit wet outside today.

Quite Nice Andy. Except for having a tail, it reminds me of the small Northrop N-1M chuck glider that was in Model Builder (IIRC) magazine back in the 1970's.

I'll balance it in the morning and hopefully get to Chuck it.

Thanks for the feedback.

I balanced it using a quarter and some tape.

It won't win a contest, but it is stable when flying.

It was also rather stable inverted - if I would chuck it hard upwards, it would snap at the top and sometimes enter inverted flight, staying there until reaching the ground.

Upright or inverted if flew about the same.

Plans, for 11x17 (ANSI B) paper.

If you build one, let us know!

It takes less than 1 sheet of 1/8" x 4 x 36, and about 1/16" x 4 x 12.

And about 25 cents to balance

Dems rather big eyeballs ! ! ! !

So you going to let the young'uns felt pen decorate it to be part of the fun?

You're also reminding me that my catapult contest model stash all went away in thermals last year. I'm all out and need to make more.

She'll probably be over tomorrow after church. Or maybe for church - I have better Internet to stream it in.

She enjoys making pictures, so she'll like this. My garage floor is getting lots of chalk on it. I love it.
