Careful!

Reply to wanted ad smells like a scam

So, I get a reply to one of my wanted ads last week. The guy says he has what I'm after and suggests I make an offer which I do and he accepts.
I ask to see a pic and what I get is a photo that I immediately matched via Google images which links back to a forum with the same pic posted about six years ago. This starts to smell a bit dodgy but I ask the guy for his Paypal ID so that I can send him the funds in a couple of days time. I suspect he's going to request Paypal friends and family payment and sure enough, I get a reply requesting payment through a cash app or Paypal friends and family.
I tell the guy that I'll cover his Paypal fee but I'll only pay using the 'pay for item' option. I've also asked that he write my name on a piece of paper and take a photo of the item next to it. I suspect I'll never hear from him again.
I won't release his name yet in case he's legit. But so far the signs smell of scam.
Sharing this so others don't get burnt.
It's so unfortunate that this website is such a magnet for scammers.

Yeah scam for sure, seem to see a lot in response to want ads and email is almost a form letter style. Search this forum you will find dozens like yours.

No matter how good the deal seems, run away! There are so many great people to deal with on this site, that there is no reason to risk it.

He’s not legit, just put his name out there’s so others can be informed of who it is.
These type of scams have been going on for awhile now...

If you don't want to release the users name just in case it's legit, why didn't you wait until the conclusion of this to verify if it's a scam or not?

I applaud your efforts, but I would have waited a few days just to see if I got a reply and whether or not there were a willingness to work with you on your request. I will usually pass on any response that asks for Friends and Family payments and yes, it does seem a bit fishy.

Sure, I can fly after sunset!?
Several of us got scammed at the same time by a fellow who was very cordial and accommodating in his emails. He had several items for sale and had numerous excuses for why the items didnít ship yet. Then he went silent.

Thatís how these scumbags operate. They are confidence men.

I wish I or someone else had reacted quicker and possibly interfere with his scam ads.

Glad I NEVER pay F&F for anything.

I just got a response from a wanted add from a James00f; same story. Responded but his mail box is full with zero trades. Looks like he has been busy!
