BAMF 2 - ArmSoarAnd now the 3rd announcing for my trip to Ukraine... I'm very excited to announce the BAMF 2.
What is different you say? Well... the wing is still based on the Synergy 2 and it's still an ArmSoar product... the model is a complete makeover. From the experience flying the BAMF for the past several years and taking a look at the events on the world stage... it seems that higher heights and higher penetration are always required to keep pushing forward. It seems that competition is biasing towards planes that penetrate very strongly with less disturbance from turbulence. Aerodynamically, the wing shape was modified to be less affected by turbulence while lift is slightly increased closer to the root. All cross-sections on the fuselage are decreased and the pushrod exits are further refined for a tighter install. In terms of flying philosophy, we feel there are two ways to tackle high winds: fly extremely fast with a lower L/D so you can reach somewhere faster, so even though L/D is lower you will reach the target area quicker and less affected by the outside forces (wind & turbulence), or secondly slightly slower than extreme but retain very high L/D so even though it may take you a few seconds to get back you should get back with a little extra height. Personally I am not an extremely aggressive pilot with 40 hours of stick time per week, so I have always preferred the second method of tackling wind. As such, the Vibe was designed that way and if you've flown it, you will know it's not the fastest out there but comes back home with height to spare. Think of the BAMF 2 as taking what the Vibe had but further increasing the L/D and with a very strong launch height ability. Mechanically, I have always wanted/needed a model that can really break down small. As such, the BAMF 2 comes with a center split 2-piece wing with a fat carbon joiner, with the option of a very simple removable fin that will be strong enough for *most* pilots. For extremely powerful launchers, it's probably still safer to glue the fin on. The nose is extended to reduce the need of noseweight and to make gear selection, install and maintenance extremely easy. Of course, the BAMF 2 will continue to be made in Ukraine where we have had an incredible few years of production success. All models are made with solid Rohacell cores, carbon shear webs, and high-quality finish. ---- Pricing will be $990 CAD (approx $747 USD) We will start shipping team models next week. These are my current settings, please feel free to use this as a starting point. The way I represent numbers is very simple, no math involved. Measurements are simply measured from the tab, they do not represent the amount of travel it goes through from each FM camber setting. Just measure it against the tab.
This setup flies nicely with minimal additional rudder input. Throws are relatively large, you can tune it down to make it easier to fly. CG: 64.0 mm (active), 67mm (calm) Camber: Launch preset: 2mm up Zoom: 2mm up Speed: 0.5mm down Cruise: 3mm down Float: 7mm down Ailerons: Speed: 6mm up, 8mm down Cruise: 6mm up, 13 mm down Float: 5 mm up, 18mm down Elevator: Speed: 6mm up, 8mm down Cruise: 10mm up, 10mm down Float: 11mm up, 11mm down Snap flaps: Speed: 0mm Cruise: 2mm up/down Float: 2mm up/down Aileron-Rudder mix: Speed: 0mm Cruise: 8mm Float: 8mm |

First of all: congratulations with this next step for the BAMF and Armsoar! And secondly, for clarification: I recognise the trend for new DLG’s to accomodate the need to cope with higher winds. My personal observation is that this negatively affects the ability of the plane to exploit weak thermals. It seems to me that the latest generation DLG’s are disadvantaged in circumstances where you benefit from a somewhat thicker airfoil that generates more lift. This observation is based on my experience during ‘all up’ matches between clubmates. During this winter, I got regularly outflown by a Flitz 1 in low wind and weak thermal circumstances. This DLG shows much better floating capabilities in these bespoke circumstances than my CX5. Are you saying that with your new BAMF 2 airfoil design you are shifting the balance towards better floating capabilties? Whilst maintaining launch height and penetration? Hope my question makes sense, please note I am a aerodynamics noob.... Regards, Roger |

I would say the Flitz 1 is in a different category in regards to float. With a slightly thicker / liftier root section on the BAMF 2 and the different distribution at the mid and tip portions we are seeing a big increase in L/D without sacrificing float compared to the BAMF 1 in modelling. Now the difference though is the BAMF 1 was designed to be an extremely hands-off model in lighter conditions but more hands on in turbulence, whereas the BAMF 2 may need slightly more concentration in light lift but more hands off in turbulence. One part is the (modelled/estimated) performace and stats, and one part is the behaviour which biases a model to certain conditions. Cheers, Thomas |

The BAMF2 is available in the Monarch graphics right now, and we have the following colors available: pink/yellow, orange/yellow, green/yellow, blue/yellow, red/yellow, white. I'll put you down for a pink/yellow standard for now, just send me a message later to confirm with me which color you'd like. For the FURY F5K model we are not making a list yet, but once the first complete model is out of the molds and we check everything and am happy with it then we will start preorders (probably mid/late March). Looks absolutely amazing in those colors, a work of art.
I think I picked the perfect time to order, counting the days down till mine arrive. Like the wing setup and mounting system, will be grate for traveling. Any pictures of the servo tray setup/ build instructions. |
