X-15 plans

Here are my newer plans for the X-15 showing the simpler construction, and full flying tail.

I've built several versions as rocket gliders, and two as pushers using a purple peril or parkjet motors.

Rocket flight video is here:

Scratch built RC X-15 rocket boosted glider with onboard video (2 min 48 sec)

You can use a motor plate and inset the motor as you would like if using a pusher.

I've flown it on D-12's, E-9's and E-6 composite aerotech reloads, the E-6 is definitely better the boost is good and the burn time is nearly 8 seconds, the D-12 is cheaper and won't go too high, it's a good starter motor. The e-9 is in the middle. Both of the estes motors require you remove the clay cap and ejection and cap the end with epoxy so it won't burn through the forward end.

Plans are here:

I recommend a 1/4" 6 foot launch rod to ensure stability especially in windy launches and the E-6RC aerotech reload motor.
If you set at least 1" of movement for aileron and 3/4" for elevator up and down, you should have plenty of throw for compensating for the nose heavy condition, in fact I didn't need as much trim as I expected. I use about 3/16" to 1/4" for post boost up trim.

The plans for the X-15 should show the CG at the wing/fuse interesection and I'm running 3/8" behind this for fully loaded launch condition, which is about neutral when it leaves the rod, burnout CG is about 3/4" ahead of the nominal CG. I would not run the liftoff CG more rearward than this.
