CNC foam cutter project

Stumbled across this and thought it might be of some interest here. Looks very simple and very cool.

I saw that pop up on the net last week.

Of course I DL'd the files.
BG is currently out of stock on the Heat controller.

The "howtomech" stuff generally has appeared to be a bit "light weight" , sorry.

I was actually more interested in what SW they were going to be using.
The machine parts are easy,
It's the HOW TO USE IT part the is generally the more complicated stumbling block.

Not sure if I want to start another big Project just yet,
since I already have two 3DPrinters and a CNC machine

But, I will be watching.

There are several other similar threads.
This one looks promising as it matured over nearly 5 yrs
Look to the end for the latest mechanical design improvements.

Wow im not alone here....

Hi nice to see you, i have the same interest for this machine. I use to learn SW for some 3d modeling process. And now I work with 4 axis cnc project machine, hot wire. Its coming evryweek long time parts by parts and step by step....

I call this Foamwire, i try to update all...

Hmm...a "3 axis" rotational cutter......"3-axis" because you cannot move the 2 X/Y gantrys independently of each other.
Seems like it theoretically could be a neat solution to shape complex fuse sections, albeit it being only usable for circular/oval/"eggshaped" sections; you can't really make something with a cross section edge that dives in below the outside tangent like a canopy edge etc. - it's a little bit like turning an object in that way.

One thing I'd be very curious about is if there exists any free or at least fairly affordable CAM software that will let you generate G code for cutting non symmetrical shapes with this?

Also, I'd strongly prefer a setup where the 2 gantrys can be moved fully independently, so a true 5 axis setup. Would still be able to do the same jobs as this, but opens up a ton of extra possibilities, primarily by making it possible to cut tapering/hollow pieces lengthwise btw. the 2 gantrys.
