Mini-HowTo

Five buk chuck away foamy glider into mini EDF, now to a Prop job! (New vid.)

Few weeks back, picked up $5- (Aus) clearance special in the local Reject shop. Haven't flown glider for a 1/4 century so why not to play with the toy. I just love bargains!
Decided to fit in one of my tiny 40mm EDF power unit, being just a free hand glider it needed lot of carbon fiber reinforcements to stiffen it up and lot of internal digging to fit the RX, ESC battery etc.
Absolutely no idea what it's going to do but certainly not planning to brake the speed record.

This toy doesn't like too much of the wind, lot nicer this morn in calm conditions.

Looks like you got more than your money's worth. And from the description sounds like it's very soar'able.

It is soar'able, loop'able but just not roll'able even after full AIL. apply.

Likely slows down too much during the roll. Dive for a touch of speed, kick the nose up to a slight positive angle and use the momentum speed and it'll likely go around fine.

It's too stable Ail.-wise, tabs are too small for aerobatics. It was fun little project but after 5 flights I think I had just about enough of gliders to fill my 25 year absence gap.

Another conversion, this time EDF to prop job, no idea how it's going to affect the thrust line, will find out soon after range, also changed back to good old 36, to make use of some of my receivers.

All good, flies much better than EDF power with hardly any amp draw, 5 compared to 30+!

It may not be exciting to fly for speed or maneuvering. But perhaps try some more challenging style of flying with it such as low as you can go or shooting crop dusting paths that zoom up, turn around and dive back down only to level out about a foot off the ground? Sometimes how we fly a model can make an easy to fly "boring" model into something more fun. Going back to soaring as an example. A nicely trimmed glider is just about the easiest and boring thing going to just fly around. But for many of us using them to find and hook onto thermals is an ongoing challenge that is constantly changing with each and every thermal due to differences. The added interest of dealing with these variations keeps a lot of us coming back for more and more. Now if you don't want to thermal fly that's fine. But you can make up other manners of challenging tasks to make an almost boring model less boring to fly.

Mate, when you become a specialist in 3D flying style, you probly know what I mean by boring.
There's very little you can do with the easy fly toyish glider like this one.
Sure, there are high performance gliders you can experiment with, but not this one, just about ready to give it away to some young school kid to practice flying skills.

We all have our interest areas for sure. And not all styles are everyone's cup 'o tea. So if you know you're done then great. And moving it along to a newbie sounds like a great option.

I have flown some 3D models and I do like them. And some fast big sky open style maneuvering models. But I also enjoy putting around with slow flyers and underpowered stuff in the manner I posted above. Heck, one of my main interests is my free flight building and flying. Just let go and watch. About as far from the 3D flying and grins as it gets I suppose.

It's the differences that make it such a great hobby.

Later this eve took it to the local cow paddock to discharge one of my 2S/1.5Ah battery, pretty good flight time with the toy, rather boring flying it on 8V pack, needs full stick most of the time to do anything exiting, but after 8 minute flight time the each cell in the pack dropped only to 4V from initial 4.17 as fully charged. The cows really enjoyed it, they just kept on coming closer to me and "booooing" with Compliments
Few more test flights on 3S before I get rid off it.
