Wright Flyer back in action
Just flew two flights this morning with the Flyer after about two hours of reconstruction last night. The crash last week was due to attempting to flare at to high a speed. The damage was very tidy and reassembly went smoothly.
This plane is quite an experience to fly.
Some more discoveries about its flight characteristics:
You have to find the sweet spot -- a combination of elevator trim and throttle setting -- that makes it behave nicely. Otherwise hang on for a very Wrightesque roller coaster of a flight.
It is not a glider. Landings have to be made from a gentle powered descent.
The elevator sensitivity goes from all you can eat to almost no response when slowing down for landing. You have to change gears mentally from never moving the stick more than an eighth of an inch to full throws when it slows down.
The Flyer is definatly a unique flying experience that gives real insight into the challenges faced by the Wrights and their incredible achievements. And it looks great in the air.
