Introduction

GO THE DISTANCE

The Truman Senate War Investigating Committee called the North American Aviation P-51 Mustang “the most aerodynamically perfect pursuit plane in existence.” During WWII, it blasted trains, ships, and enemy installations throughout Western Europe. The “D” variant, outfitted with the legendary Merlin engine, gave the U.S. Army Air Forces a high-altitude, long-range fighter capable of escorting heavy bomber formations the entire way to Berlin and back. The E-flite® P-51D Mustang 1.5m also goes the distance — to reproduce the famous fighter with exceptional detail, handling, performance and presence. It’s packed with Extra Scale details and functional features including LED lights, sequenced main and tailwheel gear doors, flaps and much more, and is also equipped with a Spektrum™ Avian™ Smart ESC to deliver an unmatched warbird flying experience.

Overview

THE MIGHTIEST E-FLITE® MUSTANG YET

The P-51D Mustang 1.5m is the largest, most detailed and best performing replica of the legendary fighter from E-flite® yet! Along with an accurate outline, it also features an abundance of Extra Scale details including molded in panel lines and hatches, guns and removable drop tanks, plus a striking factory-applied “Lou IV” finish. Functional Extra Scale features include LED navigation lights, sequenced main and tailwheel gear doors, flaps and more. The shock-absorbing struts feature ball-bearing equipped wheels with diamond tread tires for added scale appearance and make it possible to fly from a variety of surfaces including grass, and reliable electric retracts operate the main gear and tailwheel. And at the heart of it all is a factory-installed brushless motor that’s compatible with 6S LiPo power—simply drop in a 6S 3200-7000mAh battery to achieve level flight speeds in excess of 80+ MPH and unlimited vertical performance! Both versions include a 100-amp Spektrum™ Avian™ Smart ESC, and the BNF® Basic version is also equipped with an AR637TA receiver that offers full-range telemetry including real-time battery voltage, current, temperature and more to compatible transmitters, plus the advantages of exclusive AS3X® and SAFE® Select technologies to make this one of the easiest to fly Mustangs ever. The unique 3-piece wing design makes transport and storage as convenient as possible because the center section includes the main gear and the outer panels simply snap into place securely without requiring fasteners. It’s also quick and easy to assemble because the factory-finished EPO airframe bolts together—no glue required—in less time than it takes to charge a battery. And it all adds up to deliver a warbird flying experience unlike any other with the mightiest Mustang yet!

Exclusive Technologies (BNF Basic version only) This is the first large-scale P-51D Mustang model equipped with both exclusive Spektrum™ AS3X® and SAFE® Select technologies. AS3X works behind the scenes to smooth out the effects of wind and turbulence to deliver a locked-in feel that makes it seem like you're flying a much larger airplane. Optional-use SAFE Select offers pitch and bank angle limits along with automatic self-leveling that can be turned on and off at the flip of a switch making this one of the easiest to fly P-51s yet! And if you don't want to enable the SAFE Select features, simply bind the receiver normally and only AS3X will be active.

Smart Technology The P-51D Mustang 1.5m is equipped with an exclusive Spektrum™ Avian™ Smart ESC that can provide a variety of real-time power system related telemetry data including motor RPM, current, battery voltage and more via compatible receivers (including the AR637TA) and Spektrum AirWare™ equipped transmitters (including the DX6e and 8e, DX6 and 8 G2, the DX9, iX12 and others) while you fly.

Extra Scale Details The P-51D Mustang 1.5m features an accurate outline and an abundance of Extra Scale details including molded-in panel lines and hatches, guns and removable drop tanks—plus many more details than you typically find on similar class and smaller models.

Functional Extra Scale Features Factory-installed LED navigation lights, operational flaps and control surfaces with pocket hinges—even sequenced main gear and tailwheel doors—are functional Extra Scale features that take your experience to another level.

High-Performance Power The factory-installed power system features a 100-amp ESC plus a high-power brushless outrunner motor that works with the large-diameter four-blade propeller and a 6S 3200–7000mAh LiPo battery to deliver better-than-scale speed and unlimited vertical performance.

Capable Gear The wide-spaced main gear feature reliable, factory-installed electric retracts equipped with durable metal components and shock-absorbing struts that make it possible to fly from a wider variety of surfaces including paved runways and grass. The main gear and the retractable tailwheel also feature sequenced gear doors for added scale function and appearance.

Durable Precision Construction with fully-molded EPO material makes it possible to replicate complex detail and shapes in a lightweight yet durable form. The result is an outstanding scale appearance that’s easy to maintain and delivers the best possible flight experience, plus the factory-installed servos with ball-link equipped linkages deliver crisp and precise control at every speed.

Easy Assembly No glue is required for assembly and you can have the P-51D Mustang 1.5m ready to fly in less time than it takes to charge a battery! The 3-piece wing design makes transport and storage as practical and convenient as possible because the center section includes the main gear and the outer panels snap into place securely without fasteners.

Bind-N-Fly® Completion Level Advantage Already own a Spektrum™ transmitter? Bind-N-Fly (BNF) aircraft make getting into the air quickly and with the best control experience possible easier than ever. They come out of the box with the power system, servos and a Spektrum 2.4GHz receiver installed so all you need to do is bind the receiver to a compatible transmitter, finish any final assembly and fly!

This Bind-N-Fly Basic model is equipped with a Spektrum 2.4GHz DSMX® receiver featuring AS3X® (Artificial Stabilization–3-aXis) technology that works behind the scenes to smooth out the effects of wind and turbulence so you enjoy a sense of stability and precision that makes it feel like you're flying a much larger, expertly tuned aircraft.

If this is your first model of its type, or you want an extra margin of safety while familiarizing yourself with the airplane, you can enable the optional-use SAFE® Select flight envelope protection technology built into the receiver. No programming is required. Simply change up the binding sequence as directed in the manual.

With SAFE Select enabled, you get:

Pitch and Bank Angle Limits • These envelope limits keep the airplane from rolling or pitching upside down. They also prevent excessive climb or dive angles.

Automatic Self-Leveling • The airplane instantly returns to and holds level flight when the sticks are released and in the center position. It’s also helpful for keeping the wings level during takeoffs/launches and landings.

Easy Switch Assignment—No Programming Required • The simple procedure for assigning a transmitter switch to turn SAFE Select features on and off doesn't require any programming and takes just a few seconds.

If you don’t want to enable the SAFE Select features, just bind the receiver normally and it will function like a standard AS3X receiver.

Plug-N-Play® Completion Level This Plug-N-Play (PNP) model comes out of the box with a factory-installed power system and servos that are ready to connect to the compatible receiver of your choice (sold separately). Simply install the receiver, finish any final assembly and fly!

I love the color scheme. That's the color scheme that the old Hyperion P-51D had and I kicked myself for not getting one when it was available in that scheme.

Great size. It should have great presence. Hopefully this will start a new series of 1500mm warbirds because that's a really nice size. Being 6S ready is sweet too. And a retractable tail wheel? That's a nice touch. So are the sequenced gear doors.

Does it require 6S or is there a 4s-6s range like the Carbon Z planes?

Also, what made you guys decide to not put this in the Carbon Z lineup, just out of curiosity? I know it's not as big as the T-28 but 1500mm is almost 60-size as far as P-51s go.

Yeah, it's another Mustang, but this Mustang looks freaking legit. I like it.

Thread OP
I'm a bit partial to the color/trim scheme myself My first low wing model almost 30 years ago was a Dynaflite 40-sized Fun Scale P-51 that was covered almost exactly like this, one of my all-time favorite RC models is the EZ 40-45 sized P-51 that had a similar scheme, plus I've used the same/similar schemes on multiple other P-51 models I've owned/worked on over the years! But that said, I wasn't the one who chose it...two high-fives to the guys who did though

I haven't flown it on 4S or 5S, but it's got MORE than enough power on 6S so it would likely work on at least 5S and will probably fly on 4S too (maybe like my Dynaflite Mustang did with a K&B .40 in it ). But we specifically designed/developed the power system to use popular 6S 3200-7000+mAh batteries while delivering “fighter-like” speed/power/performance (see the Flight Talk video above).

And Carbon-Z has never been/referred to a particular size or class of model...it's a type of airframe design/construction that combines molded, hollow-core “Z” (EPO) foam with internal wood and carbon fiber structure/support. The first "Carbon-Z" models were smaller than the Mustang, and this Mustang, along with many of our other current/recent E-flite models, does indeed feature "Carbon-Z type" design/construction...we just don't brand/call it that anymore (we also don’t brand/call EPO foam “Z-foam” anymore).

Also, as noted in the Flight Talk video, we chose this size to provide what we believe is the best blend of detail, presence, ease of storage/transport and performance with popular 6S batteries. Yes, a larger Mustang could also fly with a 6S 3200-7000mAh battery....but for less time and/or with far less than "fighter-like" performance, and at a much higher price. That blend is why this isn't just another Mustang...it's the Mightiest, AND the Smartest, E-flite Mustang yet!

I have been trying to get people to understand this concept for a long time, to no avail. CZ means big and that's it.

With very little paint effort required, mine will look like this.

Considering the nature of the relationship between FMS and Horizon, I would expect that they don't feel any way about it.

I am loving this new P-51D! The sequenced gear doors and retracting tail wheel are awesome! That has been one of the detractors of my 1.2m P-51. The sequenced gear doors and rear retract add a lot of realism to the plane. I also like the paint scheme. When I was working on my 1.2m Mustang, I had LouIV on my short list. Either the restored version with the blue or the wartime version with OD. The Mustang wears both very nicely!

I would expect the overall size of the Mustang and Oleo struts to work great in the grass, which has always been an issue with smaller warbirds.

While it is another Mustang, there aren't many on the market with all of these features and surely none that are BNF! I think this one will be a winner! Awesome job E-Flite!

Love this size and options but i guess im the only one who doest like the scheme. Something about the blue on the wing and tail just bugs me. Id have to do a repaint to something else. This will be a big seller though and im glad to see it!

This statement confuses me. Well known that FMS manufactures a large amount of Eflite planes, which is a good thing in my opinion. Seems like a win/win. Eflite gets a nice product, FMS gets to sell a ton more than if it was FMS branded since HH's marketing and hobby store presence blows FMS out of the water.

This looks to be a bunch of updates on the old, outdated FMS 1450mm P51. Obviously a complete new 3 piece wing, which is GREAT! My FMS P51 rarely goes to the field due to size and hard to transport. So happy to see it come out of the box on 6s. My FMS has been upgraded to 6s and that is what really made the plane start to fly great in my opinion!

My only issue is all the "SMART" technology loaded into the PNP and the BNF. That seems to have driven the price up a bit for sure. Some folks may want that though, so it may not be terrible. Just not my cup of tea.

Overall, not a bad release. We need some new larger warbirds on the market for sure!

I am curious as to why a 100A ESC is needed, when the FMS P47 also has a 460kv motor (FMS 4258 on 14 inch 4 blade prop vs this 4250 on 11 inch 4 blade prop) and pulls no more than 60A or so in flight. Maybe the only SMART ESC in the lineup that was good for this application happened to be the 100??

Ha! Called it. What do I win?

Well done Jason, this is an awesome looking P51. I like the scheme, I like the size and I especially Iike the removeable outer wing panel sections. This will go in the back of my Wrangler assembled and can be ready to fly in a snap with this feature. No wrestling with bolting on wing panels and hooking up servo extensions. I didn't see any pictures of the battery compartment but I'm assuming that if it will take up to a 6s/7000 it must be decent sized.

I'm am also impressed with the flight video Jason posted and the 1.5m size definitely presents well in the air. Very solid, smooth, pattern plane like flight characteristics and reminds me of the Great Planes P-51 I had back in the late 80's. I flew the Eflite 1.2m P51 Mustang for a couple years and if the 1.5m flies as nice as that one I'm going to be very happy. I bet the 1.5m size will also be better able to handle the shaggy grass flying field our club flies from which made for "interesting" take-offs with the 1.2m Mustang on occasion.

I'm in.

Parkstormer!
My initial reaction was that it was too big for me to transport easily, but with the outer wing panels it looks like that's been addressed. I'm also flying off grass more these days . . . I love the scheme, too! This may be my first 6S plane.

While I'm not interested in a P-51 ( been there done that) , I will admit this one has some pretty cool features.
