Lee Ulinger Designed Yak-55 Build thread

I pick up a Lee Ulinger Designed Foamtana at the Arizona Electric Festival a few months back and to say it’s a great flying plane is an understatement. Word has it that his Yak55 flies as good as the Foamtana so I picked one up. This plane is about the same size as the Foamtana and should weigh about the same.

Lee Ulinger Designed Yak-55
Wing Span: 39in
Wing Area: 394sq. in.
Length: 39in
Weight: 16oz
Available at:
http://www.darrolcady.com

Equipment to be used:
Servos: 4 Hitec HS-56
Motor: Hacker A20-22L Outrunner
Controller: Hacker X-20
Battery: ThunderPower 3S-1320
Propeller: 10x3.8 APC-Slow

The plane arrived well packaged in a single small box with the peaces bagged and taped to the inside of the box.

Laying out all the peaces, everything is very strait with clean cut lines.

The Assembly starts with gluing the carbon rods into the wing and elevator. I used 30 minute epoxy by poring it into the slot and then pressing the rod in place.

The fuse construction starts by gluing on the cross brace. The braces slide into cuts in the fuse making alignment simple. Just use a triangle to check everything is at 90 degrees and run a bead of foam safe CA down both sides. You also add the rear tri stock at this point.

For the opposite side you need to hang the fuse off the side of your work table and repeat the above step.

Time to finish the wing by taping the ailerons on. Make sure you tape the top and the bottom. I use the recommended Blenderm medical tape.

The last step for the wing is to glue the wing centerpiece in place. There is a mark to help line things up just right.

Slide the wing in place and check alignment. When you are happy with the placement run a bead of foam safe CA around all connecting seems.

The last step before installing your radio gear is gluing in the control arms. Cut a slit into the ailerons so that the control arms hole will be directly over the hinge line.
