Phantom mixing?
@Tim Cullip Many thanks, Tim for taking an interest, for going to the trouble of doing tests with your own tx and for all your advice - much appreciated!

Could it possibly be that the rx is faulty and there's some phantom mixing happening there? |

Well, that is mighty baffling.
Any chance you have another Rx lying around that you could bind to that model memory and see if it behaves the same way? If it does then the problem is with your Tx (something else in the model setup or just flaky?), if it doesn't then the problem is with your B-25 Rx. Have you done a reset on that model memory to set it to factory defaults? Tim |

Go to the bottom of the menu and select "Setup List"
Then go down to "Wing Tail Mix" I'm guessing you have Elevon mix active (at least when I select that I think I get the behavior you described)? Tim |

Glad to be of assistance. I have no clue why Spektrum thought it was a good idea to have some mixes in the main menu and other mixes in the "Setup List" sub-menu; just seems like a recipe for creating confusion.
Hope your maiden goes well. Tim |

... and it certainly did in my case! Thanks again for cutting through the confusion, Tim!

Receiver setup
Another factor leading to the confusion is that the elevator and aileron ports on my receiver were swapped from what the Banggood diagram showed (see illustration). More fiddling was required. But now I've got it properly connected and mixed (Tim Cudlipp's photos of Mix 1 and Mix 2 on his own DX6i were helpful here).
As for the maiden, I'm hoping for calm weather next weekend. We've lost our indoor venue, so it'll have to be at our outdoors flying field. |

Maidened!
There was near calm at our flying field this morning, so I had a chance to maiden the B-25.
TL;DR: It flies! Before the flight, I set the controls and CoG according to the manual: aileron and elevator 5mm each side; CoG 10mm back from LE - a lead strip is provided with the kit, but battery movement was enough. I then set low rates at 70%. I hand-launched it myself on low rates. It climbed away on WOT. It was heading left and banking quite steeply, so I cut the throttle and let it come down in the grass. I gave the aileron trim 8 clicks to the right. Fellow flier Norm relaunched it and it climbed away smoothly and straight ahead. I made a couple of turns but it was clearly over-responsive, even on low rates. I let it land again and cut the aileron low rate to 55%. Norm launched it again and it now proved a remarkably stable flier on 2/3 throttle, responding positively, but not too much so, to turns. I made a few circuits, then brought it in (though Norm pointed out that there was a runway for landing on). The breeze was starting to get up, so I called it a morning, well satisfied that the B-25 was not only fun to build (well, mostly) but also fun to fly. |

Given the micro size of the wires and connectors, it was much easier for clumsy fingers to do the mixing on the tx. |

I'm not familiar with the Cessna, but going by the photos in its assembly instructions, the mounting plate doesn't appear to have any built-in offset. Maybe someone who's built one can tell you for certain.

Thanks I'll have to check it out. Nice little kits. I'm enjoying the build. The receiver I baught is so tiny and the soldering will be a challenge. Will have to make a power distribution point for the servos and esc, and solder each signal wire. So far I'm at 15 grams for the fuse with wings and 2 servos and gearbox. No pushrods yet. I split the 1/32 balsa to install the hinges, didn't want tape.
