Did it catch a thermal or had a humongous fuel tank?

Yeah, I've done that. What happens when your model is trimmed TOO GOOD.

It has happend to me 2nd test flight of a TD .010 no throttle. That is where you
get in trouble no throttle lends me to start and set the NV first then turn on the
battery to save some flying juice. Wind took the wee one off course in short order
so did not have to walk far. It only took one time to never forget again with that
plane.

Yes it's supposed to be a free flight!
What's the radio for?
Another airplane...

Was flying a beat up Tower .40 trainer in high winds years ago thinking it was just a blast to pull up hard heading into the wind full throttle. As I pulled up one more time against this big gust and hit the throttle stick forward; the on board battery pack came out the side of the fuselage and up she went into a spiral higher and higher...... Disappeared out over the farm fields as a spec in the sky. Never to be seen again. I think it's orbiting the earth to this day.....

I've converted several 1/2A RC planes to Free Flight, a few times.

Heck, they didn't need me to fly well! I put the transmitter down and enjoyed the show.

A L'il Satan with busted down line and half a tank left, makes a great impromptu free flight as I found out once yearrrrs ago. Spiralled up a couple hundred feet or so and drifted across the road, came down safely. Good old dacron lines..
