F5J USA Tour 2020

Welcome to the 2020 F5J USA Tour! This is our fourth Tour season. Already we have a nice starting lineup of 2020 events in the Calendar with more to come soon. The F5J USA Tour season is Dec 1-Nov 30 which made the December F5J in the Desert (Phoenix) our first 2020 season event. Full Tour info is here.

Description:

Register your event - Clubs and organizers are invited to register their events by filling out our online event application. One of the main benefits of having your event on the Tour is that we expect it will encourage more pilots to attend. Note there is a $3/pilot fee to clubs (due when you send us your scores) to cover end-of-season award and related expenses.

Updated 2020 F5J Rules- As many of you know, earlier this year the FAI F5 sub-committee met and decided on FAI rule changes for the 2020 season. These changes were released on Dec 16. We have gone through all our rules website pages and updated the FAI F5J Rules, Tour Contest Rules, and Tour CD Guidelines. You can find all this info from our main Rules page where you will find all the details.

Here are several highlights of the 2020 FAI rule changes:
  • Landing direction – 5.5.11.11 (b) – Landing approach direction can be chosen by pilots on each flight, or, at the discretion of the CD, the landing direction may still be declared by the CD.
  • Stability systems and airborne sensors – 5.5.11.1.1 – The use of stability systems, gyros, or airborne sensors that could be used to actuate control surfaces are prohibited.
Here are the 2020 F5J USA Tour rules deviations from the FAI 2020 rules:
  • Emergency motor restarts – Emergency motor restarts are allowed but will result in a zero flight score i.e. not a penalty
  • Altimeter hardware is allowed – Installation of altimeter hardware that enables reporting of a plane’s altitude is allowed but active reporting of altitude data must be disabled during Tour events.
  • Launch delay before turning – For enhanced safety reasons launches must be straight forward for 3 seconds before turning. This has been in use in F5J USA Tour contests for 2018 and 2019.
  • Launch location – As dictated by the CD the launch location will either be within 4 meters of the landing spot, or will be inside the Access Corridor within 2 meters of the lane indicator (flag). Zero flight score for violating.

If you plan to host a Tour event we suggest that you review the above rules and CD Guidelines information and also check out the Qualifying Events page.

F5J USA Tour Advisory Group - This group is responsible for managing the Tour and includes the following key supporters and pioneers of USA-based F5J: Lee Wolfe, Steve Neu, Lenny Keer, Larry Jolly, Jim Monaco, David Beach, and Chris Bajorek. Each advisor brings significant experience and energy to this group.

2019 financial statement now available- Following the end of each season we publish a financial statement (our ledger) that shows the Tour's sources and uses of funds. You can find our 2019 season ledger at the bottom of our Financial Declaration page.

Join our email list - In 2019 we started using email to deliver occassional announcements and even a newsletter every now and then. If you are not already on our list you can sign up on f5j-usa.com via the "F5J USA Tour email list" box located in the right-hand sidebar of every page.

Hope to see you at the next F5J USA Tour event and, as always, thanks for your ongoing support of US-based F5J.

I was a little surprised to see the acknowledgement (?) of restarts and of AMRTs that allow it.
The only mention is in the AMRT section, nothing in the scoring section.
Quote:
5.5.11.1.3. Characteristics of Radio Controlled Gliders with electric motor and altimeter/motor run timer (AMRT).
...
The essential functions of the AMRT are:
i) To record and display the maximum height attained (Start Height), above a
ground level reference between the instant of motor start and 10 seconds after
the motor is stopped and
ii) To restrict the operation of the motor by the competitor to a single continuous
run not exceeding 30 seconds.
iii) To reset the start height displayed to “---” if the motor is restarted at any time
during the flight.
This rule can be used as a local rule at FAI World Cup and Open International
events, but not at Category One events.

Hi Oleg, that addition was "proposal k" that came from the USA (thank you Jim Monaco!). The initial sub-committee vote for that change was 4 yes, 7 no but the final decision sent out in July was to allow it as long as it was excluded from FAI category one events. It is still a Tour deviation because of the open scoring issue you pointed out.

I forgot that it was Jim's proposal (thanks Jim).
Was the proposal lacking the required scoring verbiage or did the CIAM strike it off the final version?

As Jim described in his justification text for this proposed change, " 5.5.11.7.e) already describes the penalty for the condition when the AMRT does not record a start height." i.e. "---" on the display. So technically a zero flight result is already accounted for.

More 2020 events added

More events have been posted to the 2020 Tour calendar:

F5J in Visalia #1 on Mar 21-22 in Visalia CA. This is their first 2-day event of the season hosted by CVRC. Organizer and CD is Tim Johnson. Details coming. This flying field is very popular in the western region and always has interesting and challenging varied conditions. On Friday before the main event they usually run a Low Launch Challenge that has become almost as much fun as the 2-day F5J.

F5J in Vegas on May 3-4 (Sun-Mon) in Sandy Valley NV. This is a 2-day event hosted by Rocky Mountain Soaring Association. Organizers are Jim Monaco and John Lovins. Details coming. This is the 4th annual Vegas event held at the same sod far in the middle of the Nevada desert. This F5J event is the second part of a 4-day F3J+F5J double header. Fly in both if you like or just come for the F5J--either way it is worth the trip.

F5J in Visalia #2 on June 6-7 in Visalia CA. This is the second 2-day event for this season as hosted by CVRC.

More soon...

2020 Tour update

Hope everyone's 2020 is going well.

Tour Calendar is filling out nicely

If you have not checked the Tour calendar lately now is a good time to take a peek. There are currently 15 Tour events listed for 2020: 8 west, 7 east. There are more coming* but this is an excellent lineup so far. Events in February: the Southwest Classic F5J in Phoenix and Warm and Sunny Florida F5J in Morriston. Both are great venues with growing pilots lists. * Several western region events including the 2020 North/South F5J Challenge date will not be announced until the Team Select date is locked into the calendar.

Team Selection update

As you know this year a Team Selection (TS) event will be held that will decide who goes to the 2021 WC. While there is a dedicated RCG thread for this I'm sharing status here since the TS date impacts Tour events and your travel plans. Steve Manganelli, the F5 TS Committee Chairman, is actively accepting bids from clubs that are interested in hosting the TS event. If you are interested please request the TS Program document from Steve M. or me that contains details on what you need to include in your bid. FYI I am reaching out to several clubs this week that have either indicated past interest or have been recommended by others.

Any q's let me know. Thanks.
Chris
