Great Planes Waco YMF-5 engine?

Will this airframe handle a Saito FG-33R3 ? Any building tips?

I am putting one together now and the cowl os 7.3 inches. This motor is 7.9 inches. Would be great in it but will not fit in the cowl.

I mounted a Magnum 1.60 twin and it fits inside the cowl. I think a Saito 170 Radial may fit?

Could you trim the inner part to make it work? I think it would be awesome sounding power in it.

If I take the front of the trim cowl off. The cowl will have no attachment point.

FG-30 is about 1500 grams and a dle-35ra is 1047grams. The four stroke would probably pull it around great but would be very heavy on the nose. Note a 35ra is about 100 grams less than a dle-30 the manual calls for. The power output of the Fg-30 is closer to a 25cc motor.

30cc is unnecessary power. I fly mine with a vvrc 20cc. It yanks and banks with the best of them. You also need to be aware of the gear mount formers in the fuse. They have too many lightening holes in them making them a bit weak. Mine broke after five flights. The landings were NOT hard bounces. I'd suggest sandwiching those two formers with 1/8" ply. Mine is still flying after that repair. Lots of fun.

Does the 20 cc vvrc motor fit in the cowl? I was looking at the 40cc twin.

Almost. I have two vvrc 40cc twins. Its 8-3/8" wide. The waco cowl is about 8" wide without the blisters.

Yes, but strongly recommend the tech-aero ibec. I've got 6 and never had a failure. I've got around 20 rcexl and over 20 years had 2 failures. Not bad enough to stop using. Just have to watch out for that.

Update

Found an engine that will fit inside the trim cowl. Saito FA-120R3. I will have to put glow ignition on it.

Will it have enough power for "your" flying style?
