50 watt Laser power supply and laser tube upgrade..
Well.. while my Chinese 'K50' has done a pretty decent job for me, I have not been able to cut aircraft grade plywood like I wanted to, so a while back, I asked which were the best tubes and I got a few answers, so, I went with a RECI 'High Quality' W2 80-90 tube from Light
Object, and to light it up, I went with one of their Smartbean 80W PWM CO2 Laser Power Supplies. So far, I have stripped the original tube and power supply out and gotten the new power supply installed. I forgot to get some 'before' pics, but, I took a picture of the original power supply sitting in front of the new power supply, just to give you an idea of the difference in size between the two. For clearance for the cathode lead and cooling fan end. I had to move the power supply over, so I turned a set of stand-offs in my lathe and made a mounting plate to mount the new power supply on. I hope to have the new tube in tomorrow and get this thing fired up again. Ok.. here are a few pics, with more to come.. SteveT. |

Wow. The inside of the machine is surprisingly (to me, anyway) well "dressed". It'd be a nightmare if it was a rat's nest of wires running point to point...

Actually, it is surprisingly well laid out, but those raceways are pretty full. Fortunately, the difference in wiring for the two power supplies is minimal, as there is basically 'no' info as to switching it over. The raceway that has the cover off has a cover for it, but I left it off until tomorrow until I can wire in the milliamp meter. Once that is done, it will be installed.

And.... it's done and working!!! Didn't have a lot of time to test it out, but definitely more more power!!! I had to dial the RDWorks down in the vendor setting as I was over driving the tube. Now getting 82 watts at 21.5 milliamps, so may dial it down a bit more..
I 3D printed some tube mounts for the tube and they worked out great. The last photo is of the cover I designed and had the flange laser cut, then the rectangular tube bent, and then lastly, welded up. Here are a few more pics. Only needs final alignment and I'm ready to go. SteveT. |
