HobbyKing 90A ESC question


This is the marine version but I think the progaming is the same as airplane. Some people say they will handle only 14 pole and not high Kv. Some say it is OK, just try it? Does anyone know if it will handle a 16 pole outrunner like in the ProBoat Recoil 26. It is 42 mm diameter, about 30 mm long and about 2000 kv on 4 cell. If so would you use max timing, Automatic, or ????

This ESC has reversing capability, that would not seem to be proper for a model airplane. And, perhaps the marine version would be a bit heavier? Plus, this ESC depends on water cooling, something not available for a model airplane.

The good news: controllers don't care about number of magnetpoles, nor about Kv, nor about shaft-rpm.
The bad news: they care about 2-magnetpole rpm a.k.a. electrical rpm, that maximum is specified.
E-rpm = shaft-rpm #magnetpole_pairs.A
N and a S pole passing a statorpole is one complete commutationcyle, current has to reverse twice. The more magnets, the more switching, the more calculations per second needed.

Say your controller can handle can handle 2-magnetpole motor at 210krpm, processor computationwise. With 4-magnetpoles controller 'feels' or has to handle 4 magnetpoles per revolution, twice as much, thus halving max. rpm.

Max Speed: 210000rpm for 2 Pole BLM, 70000rpm for 6 pole BLM, 35000rpm for 12 pole BLM.

Max.rpm is always given for two magnetpoles (= one magnetpole pair).
You can simply inter- and extra-polate those numbers, just divide by magnetpole-pairs
105krpm 4-magnetpole
52.5krpm 8-magnetpole
42.0krpm 10-magnetpole
30.0krpm 14-magnetpole
... ... ...
2.1krpm 200-magnetpole
