The Russians can't train Saudis to fly F-18s or F-35s.

Putin and OPEC just agreed to cut oil production to raise prices. Sounds like they are working together just fine. Probably have some good Trump jokes.

In 1976 we had Iranians being train in the Navy's San Diego bootcamp. I was there and saw them myself... Fast forward to 1979 and I find myself in the Persian Gulf with the word from the Captain that "It looks like war boys, It's the presidents call now."

Jimmy Carter was protecting the Iranians.

That's why they'll be buying Russian planes too.

Protecting the Iranians? You should read history.

Reagan got Israel to supply Iran with F-16 parts and ordinance, remember Iran-Contra?

Still we treated them to weapons and training and I see where I wound up 3 years later and it was under the watch of the peanut farmer.

We got rich selling Iranians weapons, I think there was talk of selling them a non-nuclear aircraft carrier near the end, and some escort ships.. big dollar items.

The USA began supporting the Pahlavi dictatorship AKA "Iran" during the Eisenhower administration. Carter simply continued the practice. The USA munitions industry loved it. The military services loved it. The US State Department loved it. The only minor problem was the Iranian people did not love it, but the Shah was Our Man In Iran, so who cares?

That piper is still being paid today. Carter's 'contribution' to the mess was relatively minor.

Research Institute’s (SIPRI) estimates of values of arms transferred in 2018.
1. United States of America (USA) – $10.5bn
The total value of the arms exported by the US was $10.5bn in 2018, while the nation closed foreign military sales (FMS) contracts worth $55.6bn during the year for transferring arms to its allies.
In '76 and '77 I was training Iranian military in the F-4 Phantom systems. In'78 I found myself in Pakistan with a squadron of newly minted F-15's. 'Official' purpose was a joint military training exercise, but it came across as a sales pitch to our allies in that region for superior American weaponry. We were #1 in arms exports back then, and still are today. That may change soon if the Trump administration keeps ceeding ground to our competitors, like #2 Russia.

I looked on Wiki, Iran had f4, f5 II Tigers and F 14s. They still had at least 60 F 14s in the Iraq Iran war. They had ordered 150 F 16s, but that was actually delivered to Israel after the Iranian Revolution in '79.
