There are a few options here. You could hack a single prop, single rudder to keep the running gear as simple as possible. Next, twin screw, twin rudder. Then, of course, four motors. What kind of operation are you looking for? Just for fun or super scale? At that small scale, twin throttles and the complexity get less noticeable. I hade that in a 1:200 Yamato, but that ship at that scale is not very small.
Using cheap, small, brushed motors you can gang multiple motors on an esc. With brushless, one esc per motor. The 280 size motor is probably most common. Lots available from surplus stores for a few dollars. For an esc, use one from small scale rc mini trucks and crawlers. Amazon will have simple rc car units that take a 6 cell stick pack or 2S lipo. You will only need a couple of amps capability. Rc car esc's do have the annoying reverse/brake lockout, though. Props can be had several different ways as well. Home made ones are not too hard to make either. Shafts and tubes can be purchased or made yourself. At this small size, simple stuff works, like using silicone fuel tube for flexible shaft connectors. Check this section for another Missouri build. Lots of good tips and tricks there. Dave |

I recommend staying away from coreless brushed motors used today in many drones and aircraft.
Lacking an iron core to absorb heat, coreless motors burn out very quickly and easily under heavy loads, say with a jammed prop for one example. Standard brushed motors like those in Boater-Dave's post are ideal. More details of the beast: https://www.motioncontroltips.com/wh...ess-dc-motors/ |

Maybe settle on a power setup first, then zero in on motors. Do you have any rc stuff now? Or is this one the one and only? I ask because if you already have batteries and chargers, etc, we can direct you to similar items.
For a super simple 1:350 Missouri, I would think a 6 cell NiMH pack, rc car esc and a cheap 2 stick, 4 channel radio would be just fine. Even a wheel/trigger 2 channel radio, if you prefer, and won't be needing the extra couple of channels. That hull should be able to hold that stuff, along with 2 or 4 motors and shafts. Dave |

The transmitter is fine. I have several of those myself. Did you also get a receiver? Most likely any compatible receiver will work in a 1:350 Missouri. But if you have to purchase one, look for the ones with the longer surface antennas. Not a must have, but they give you more options in some builds.
The charger is also very nice. It will take care of all the batteries you will come across in the hobby. You just list 'lipos'. How big? How any cells? If they are 2S, about 2500 mah, they should be fine. 3S (11.1 volt) and you may find it harder to get the right motors. You could go super cheap and just use brass tube and SS rod for shafts. What do the plastic kit props look like? Or check out Harbor Models. They have cast metal props, in 3, 4 and 5 blades (sometimes) in small diameters. Now let's see, the real ship had 17'5", 5 blade props inboard, with 18'3", 4 blade props outboard. In 1:350 scale, that would be 0.60" and 0.63", resp. Harbor Models should have shafts, too. I have used Dumas 1/8" shafts and tubes, but then you need props with a 5-40 thread. Your kit is only 30" long, so you don't need much to make it work. Motor to shaft couplers, as I mentioned, can be easily made with a chunk of silicone fuel tube. Quiet when running, and easy to make. Dave |

I am no expert on 180 motors so I cannot advise about whether a particular motor is suitable. I always look for motors with carbon brushes so make sure that is part of the description. If you are going to use 4 shafts/ props all small dc motors will be happy working in either direction. Your problem is more likely to be finding suitable propellers for both directions of rotation or are you going to make them? |
