Volantex Sport Cub 761-4 Stabilized 4 Channel Trainer Airplane Flight Test Review
This four channel RC trainer plane can be flown fully stabilized while still allowing stunt aerobatics. If you get into trouble in a stunt, just let go of the sticks and the plane will quickly and automatically level itself. Find it here.
And here is its flight demonstration.
Pros - Ready to fly with included transmitter. - True four channel airplane with throttle, elevator, rudder, and aileron control. - Three selectable flight modes. Beginner mode includes full 6 axis stabilization (3 axis gyro and 3 axis accelerometer). Also includes angle restrictions that prevent the aircraft rolling or pitching over. Intermediate "Midd" mode also includes 6 axis stabilzation, but turns off pitch angle restrictions to allow manual stunts. Expert mode turns off all stabilization for fully aerobatic manual flying. - Controller also includes a stunt button that allows the airplane to automatically conduct loops and aileron rolls. - Quick disconnect propeller saver automatically disconnects the propeller in a crash to prevent propellor or motor damage. Propeller can be quickly reattached after the crash to continue flying. - Constructed of flexible and crash resistant EPP foam. Cons - Although fully stabilized to lessen the chance of crashes, it is a bit fast for beginner pilots. Beginners might have difficulty flying this as they won't have much time to react and correct beginner's mistakes (particularly if they lose orientation). - Roll stunts are somewhat slow with this plane. Be very careful when attempting to do such, even when using the automatic stunt button. The plane will drop about 20 feet to complete a roll, so make sure you have plenty of altitude before starting the roll. - Brushed motor airplane. Its motor will eventually fail some day. |

Nice enough but, we need more micro Warbirds (that dont cost the twice the price of the Volantex/Eachine P51 ie UMX )
Some 4 blade props would be nice too. |

No Mode 1 Version!
As with the otherwise very good Volantex mini Mustang P-51D, there is no Mode 1 transmitter available, it seems.
There are millions of us in the world who fly Mode 1. Asking us to fly in Mode 2 is like asking us to drive a car with the accelerator and brake pedals reversed. Volantex and Banggood are missing out on a lot of sales! |

What happens if Tx signal is lost?
I am wondering whether this plane has the same problem as the Volantex Mini P-51D when you power off the transmitter, to simulate flying out of range or a flat battery on the Tx. The P-51D goes to FULL THROTTLE after about a second, and stays at full throttle until the signal is restored, whereupon it goes to the previous throttle setting, then after a few more seconds throttles right off.
That is NOT safe, is sure to lead to fly-aways, so I am hoping it's fixed on this one. |

Speaking of that, I wonder if it also operates the control surfaces. It's supposed to have return to home, even though that is not reliable, since there is no gps, but it's just a headless mode trick. Maybe the idea was to make the plane fly back home as fast as possible, to get back in range of the transmitter? Still not a smart idea, considering the unreliable RTH feature, and also it's never a good idea to have something go full throttle when signal is lost.

I picked up both the Sport and the Super, the latter 3-channel version for training new pilots. The controllers look identical.
(Why is the "Super" not the name of the aerobatic version???) By the way, I can verify that the unbreakable foam wing is breakable. Not too proud of that. You just have to make sure you hit the tree limb hard enough... Some "Shoe Goo" adhesive from the local department store shoe department fixed it nicely. And if you ever wondered what it looks like inside.....I got curious. Note the receiver antenna sticking straight up: Looks like a low-wing mod would not be hard either: |

After seeing how these small high wing planes fly pretty well, I ordered a Sport Cub as well. Today was the maiden, bit too windy, plane almost got blown back on the runway, but once up in the air it went pretty nice. Loops need a bit more speed than on the Mini Mustang, maybe also because of the wind, but the wings and struts of the Sport Cub surely will add more drag too, compared to the warbird. Still, I even flew a bit in acro/expert mode, and the plane felt very stable for it's size. The P51 has some trouble tracking straight in acro mode, in a decent breeze, but the Sport Cub mostly struggled to move into the wind, but didn't want to veer off course easily. Landing was a bit bouncy, there were some gusts making the plane climb or drop intermittently, but managed to get it down with the prop still unscratched.

Take a flight in my Sport Cub 500 - Rear-facing view. Winds vary 3-9 mph.
I managed a few simple aerobatics, even while still in the high-rate gyro mode:

I finally captured some "2-cam" video, though I still need to find a better forward-facing cam in the sub 5-gram range (not including battery weight. The Looxcie 2 I used for the rear view is only 4.7g plus the minor weight of an 80 mAh pack.
I used a "Mini 1920*1080P HD DV Recorder FPV Camera FOV 140 Degree" night vision, motion-sensing cam operating in simple record mode. I removed from it's case to reduce weight and then mounted it on the fuselage positioned for the front view, but video quality results were horrible. I ran that one off a 100mAh pack: https://www.banggood.com/Mini-192010...r_warehouse=CN

Nice video. The rearward image looks much more stable and smooth than the forward image. If you take that it appears the plane is flying in heavy turbulence, but the rear camera just shows a regular aerobatic flight.

Thanks. I wish I could find cams that size that are HD resolution, but most I try are 640x480 like the rear facing cam or produce a low quality image like the front one.
I can't find any more Looxcie 2 cams either, just bigger and heavier Looxie HD versions. Still looking. Happy flying! |

Flew the Sport Cup today, after the wind finally died down enough. Still loving how it flies. The Mustang is a bit faster and more agile, but this one flies more smoothly, and I can more easily handle flying in acro mode with it.

Bang Good FINALLY has replacement wings, props and fuselages for the 761-4 Sport Cub. These will be handy for custom builds. I just ordered a set.
