I bought this plane as I was looking for something I could fly in my front yard. Looks like it will be perfect. I am going to maiden today. I will use a 2S 800mah battery.

@Midtimer1, I agree there does not seem to be much out there on this plane, which is surprising as it it looks good.
I created a thread elsewhere looking for feedback from anyone who owns a Ranger 850, but have now linked it to this one. @jobinseattle I will watch your video, but would be keen to know what you think of this plane. I already have an xk x520, but am by no means an experienced flyer. What tempted me about the FMS was a. the size - small enough to be flown on the playing fields I have nearby, but a little bit of weight compared to some micro planes so does not require dead calm conditions - I'd be keen to hear real world opinion on this. b. in built stabilisation - whilst the aim is to learn to fly properly, it's a nice safety net whilst I learn and to make flying in days with a bit of wind possible. Apparently it also has a GPS geo fence and return to home! c. i think I could use the turnigy 2s 950mah batteries I have for the x520, which would save money. d. able to hand launch and maybe able to land on long grass (if you remove the landing gear would belly landings be possible?). Whilst the x520 is vtol, it's not great taking off/landing in wind and landing gear is not ideal for grass. e. it is RTF. I know the transmitters that come in RTF kits are notoriously bad compared to programmable transmitters, but I'm not planning on building up a large 'fleet' so am not ready to pull the trigger on an expensive transmitter at the moment. There are a few YouTube videos, but none that cover the RTF kit and very view references on the forum. If anyone one one if these and can give an opinion I'd be keen to hear feedback. Thank you! |

I personally wouldn’t trust the ‘GPS’ geo fence gimmick, hopefully there’s a kill switch (motor cut outside tx range) so it shouldn’t escape too far. You would be able to hand launch and belly land, though looking at the landing gear it’s beginner friendly ie very springy, so maybe you’re better using it. Lastly you’re right about stock receivers with some RTF models, in my experience the Volantex RTF P51D is terrible. From fly away planes, tx input loss and unexpected nose dives, you have to choose your model carefully. Hopefully the FMS is nothing like that. If you get one, kindly update the thread. Regards |

@Midtimer1 you are probably correct about being overly reliant on the 'geo fence'. It kicks in at 120m according to what I've read - I'm not sure I'd be looking to fly a plane this size that far away to test it out! I'd be more interested in the return to home as a safety feature in case I lost orientation. To be fair it's only an issue I've had with flying small drones line of sight, where it is sometimes hard to pick up which way they are facing.

Just got mine for the nice Amazon price after Thanksgiving, with the TX and battery/battery charger for under a hundred. One of the few prices that really was a great deal. The wires that go to the servos are very thin and I pulled out one aileron plug from the packing tape and the wires stripped off it. Will have to resolder the pins and put them back into the plug. A little flat black paint on the cowl inlets and a little adjustment to the cabin windows to make it more scale like and we'll be good to go. A park pilot review also suggested to add a drop of glue to the magnet holding the battery hatch in place. Other than that, with the price, it looks like a good replacement for the HZ Champ I had in the stable as my go to "throw it in the car to go fly" plane.

I took advantage of that Amazon deal as well, just received the Ranger 850mm, still in the box, gonna put a bow on it and open it for Christmas lol. Will actually take a look at her to make sure there is no damages but I don’t think I’ll be flying anything soon with the current restrictions in place.
