EDF50 scratch built foam Jet flies

I purchased what I think was the first EDF50 available in the Greater Toronto Area. I built the model below from the inner-foam layer of a piece of foam core board and flew it today for the first time. This is my own design, built from experienced guesses for sizes and shape.

The model flies on 6 x 110mah batteries for about 2 minutes. It flies slowly enough that I plan to try it indoors. I flew it first, and then my son. The first flights were perfect (no crashes, easily controlled flight and nice landings) despite wind gusts blowing it around.

Total weight, with battery pack is 161.5 grams (approx. 5.7 ounces).

Very nice! Glad to hear it flew well. It's hard to beat a delta for stability.
Try 7 cells next time and compare. I've been using 7 110's on all My EDF 50 models.
Great job!

Great looking little plane! We should get a plans site up for edf-50 planes. Did you roll the duct for the fan?

I cut the duct out of the same foam, in a long rectangular shape. I then held it under hot pouring water, and slowly and gently rolled it up tightly. I taped it tightly with masking tape and let it dry and cool down overnight. This morning I carefully cut it to fit the fan unit - I finished building it this morning, and flew it at noon.

That looks sweet, the last plane I saw in that configuration was powered by a pulse-jet. My hat off to the inventor of foam, for bringing us so much fun.

Howdy neighbor!

I just found this forum and am amazed at how far the hobby has come in the short while I've been "away" . I pulled out the old RC gear tonight and got a few things working, the 4 channel isn't cooperating though

I absolutly have to build a DF and its great to see they can be scratch built and designed succesfully. I just may need some more details on that setup you have!

I have a Novak M5 ESC, its a tad heavy but will this be acceptable for my first few df models? Where did you get your fan?
Thanks in advance
Cheers,
James

Rampager: Buy a cheap 5amp esc, they are cheap, and light enough for electric flight. Every gram counts! The Novak is WAY too heavy for edf-50's. Might work in a bigger jet though!

Michael: Great looking bird! Awesome job!
