yeah, don't know why. Same guts from GWS sky train. Figured foam board would be lighter than Depron. Going to fig out how to lighten the load ... somehow.

Foamboard is MUCH heavier than Depron unless you remove the paper, and then it's not as strong as Depron. It will also really soak up the paint unless you seal it first with something like water based poly...

Hello Shane,

Yes it does look very heavy to me too. My C121 Constellation in post #935 weighs a little less at 1lb 8oz.

This includes a 3 cell 1300mAh battery, which should weigh nearly double your 2 cell 1000mAh, and of course has 4 motors, 4 ESCs e.t.c..

It has around 200 watts but I would expect flies fine on around 100 watts. Props, motor info e.t.c. in post #935.

A combination of losing some of the plane's weight and increasing the thrust from the motors may be the best solution, since it may be hard to lose lots of the weight without rebuilding in Depron.

Have you done any calculations / measurements of performance for your motor, battery & prop setup ?

Regards,

Dominic

Found an old chart on the motors, looks like you'll be maxing out at about 100W with the proper props. It ought to fly, although it won't set the sky on fire. What props are you using?
At the risk of stating the obvious, you do have the motors wired in parallel, not series? If they were in series you're only getting 1/2 the power you should...

The plane in post 934 looks an awful lot like Bell's Aracuda experimental before WW II. Date seems about right as well. IIRC there were guns and gunners in the front of each nacelle. Never was accepted for some reason -- Google'd probably tell you.

As we learned a long time ago, a heavier plane will fly ... You just need MORE Power!!!

Downloaded the plans for this last night. I can't believe It took me this long to find it!

I want to deviate a little and make an airfoil wing(2 layers sanded) and move it to the bottom of the fuse, and keep the prescribed dihedral.

I was toying with the landing gear and trying to make them retractable .......

Any thoughts?

J, just build it as it is and Enjoy it ...It flies Great (as one would expect from a GeneBond design) and looks Very realistic in the air ...

I tend to agree with gpw. Haven't built one, but seen several fly, they fly really well, and for a profile,t look real nice in the air. If you want more scale, I'm not sure that this is the best place to start. I would start with 3views and look for other DC3 scratch builds for full fuse/airfoil construction ideas. I'm not dissing Gene's excellent design, but when one makes a profile version, they make compromises that are different from those that one might make if doing a full fuse version. Going to profile than back to full fuse really muddy's the water so to speak.

to add on to gpw's comment, just build and fly this one and figure out how to do the twin power system and other setups, then do a scale version!

Hi J,
I built mine full fuse, folded air foiled wing mounted low like the real thing.
Any way you build it, Gene's design works fantastic (mine just had it's 5th birthday in Dec).
good luck,

Springer nailed it in his description of Gene's model. It does look great in the air, probably the best profile plane I've seen in the air.

But if you do desire a full-fuse or airfoiled model, the Fiddler's Green C-47 would be a good start: http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/models/...-Skytrain.html

Found some photos I've saved of retracts created for a DC3 foamie by someone else here (unfortunately don't have the original link).

Gpw, springer, I have a question then, how do you do the UC airfoil? The plans have no marks for scoring the foam or anything? I am using DTF by the way.
You guys are the the subject matter experts, so show me how.

Springer I put my profile SR 71 in a tree yesterday and thought of you
