DC-9-51 in depron with 40mm EDFs

My latest depron build is almost ready to fly. I built the stretched -51 because I wanted to challenge myself and make a handlaunch build that could fly comfortable with 40mm fans and have a AUW lighter than my 737-400 which is also 1/25 scale.

1/25
64" length
45" wingspan
4g aileron and elevator servos
1.8 lbs RTF

Plans are from Skyline Paper Models. The wing was built directly from the fuselage so this whole project is built like one big paper model modified for RC flight and electronics.

Thinking about TWA or Continental airlines for the final scheme.

If you're looking for these plans they have unfortunately vanished along with his other designs from the two websites that sold them. PM if you need help sourcing them for RC use.

What a cool airplane. I got to fly on one of the last Northwest -51s from MEM to ICT around 20 years ago. Lots of pops, bangs, jet fuel smell and hydraulic pack whine. It was built in 1967, they got their money's worth out of that one.

Wauh Ethan .... great Job as ever.
It seems we have compareable projects running parallel

My DC-9 is 106 cm long with 90 cm wingspan (QX-30mm EDF 3S500mAh). RTF 560 Gramm

best

How much thrust are you getting from the 40 mm fans as a percentage of the 1.8 lbs all up weight?

Great looking aircraft Rudi!
Can you show the details on the elevator linkage? I need some ideas for my indoor 1/22 scale Hawaiian 717.

Looks really good!! I like how you cut out the windows and added a flying horizontal stabilator.

I have not measured the thrust myself but advertised thrust is "up to 400 grams" each so 800 grams would be right around a 1:1 thrust ratio which is what I try and aim for with my airliners. In reality of course, 1:1 thrust ratio can still give marginal performance with EDFs and I don't expect to get the full advertised thrust even with 50-70C LiPos.

The first flight was supposed to be yesterday but the rain has pushed it to next weekend. I am adding details in the meantime. This build has no rudder so I am adding a gyro to help keep it stable and I plan on avoiding wind lol

Hi Ethan,

thank you very much. The proove of concept is still missing. Until now I lost one rotor from the QX-30 EDF ( I ordered a replacement rotor from banggood) during a test run. All in all the fans del. enough thrust but if CG and AoA is o.k ??

best

Rudi
