Giant Glider Drone Delivering Cargo

The Silent Arrow is the first production ready delivery drone that can handle payloads of 1631lbs. It's an autonomous glider with a 28' wingspan. The wings are spring deployed and when stowed away, the drone takes up a 2x2x8' space. It has a glide ratio of 8.4:1 and it's towed up by either helicopter or a fixed wing aircraft before being released to glide its way to the designated zone. It should be able to deliver a lot of supplies in one run to much needed humanitarian or disaster areas which could ultimately save lives.

Where is the landing phase on the video? What if the terrain is obstructed? That stall speed... what if there is a crosswind and it lands sideways to its ground track... is it reusable after that? Looks like there is no place for a mistake during approach as it doesn't have its own propulsion.

Good concept but lots of questions LOL

Why not just drop the supplies using a parachute?

This is a military thing ... designed to be dropped from altitude some distance away where the LZ is in a hostile area. It's not re-usable; they already use a similar system called JPADS which is based on a steerable parachute. This thing would have a much better glide ratio so could be dropped from further away.

Funny to see that it uses Ardupilot

Wow this looks surprisingly sketchy. At 1600 lbs this thing must glide like a rock.

The fact it runs ardupilot is funny. Also it's a glider does that mean it can hook a thermal? Haha seems like it has it's use just not a very big market outside of the military I would assume.

It was developed for special forces - makes perfect sense to have a way of resupplying them silently from a significant distance away. Pretty pointless for any other application though.

Auto-rotation would be better.

I could see the use. Take something like this up to 30,000 feet in a C-130 and shove it out the back and you could deliver it a long ways. Possibly without crossing into unfriendly airspace, etc.

Not bad in concept.

It seems they could have come up with something that has folding wings and is a little more aerodynamic than that.
