Build Log

J3 cub 1180mm

My J3 Cub 1180mm balsa build log.

I purchased this kit from Banggood, quality seems good, nicely cut parts, poor instructions however.

Thank you, its my first model so steep learning curve made even more challenging as the instructions leave you guessing a lot of the time!

Nice progress! I've done a few of the cheap Chinese kits before and their instructions are certainly.... "interesting". Tiny pictures, horrible translations, misinformation, and incorrect data. Other than that, they're great! I've always felt that if you can build a Chinese kit you can build just about anything.

Yes they are not the best but very cheap! I started the wings last night and they are extremely hard to build following the single low res picture!

I see what you mean about poor instructions. I looked for an 1180mm span Cub, but the nearest I found was the 1200mm. It's manual shows a few assembly shots and a lot of Chinese. It's not too hard, and there is lot's of help to be found here on RCG. If you can't find how something fits, just ask, someone will help.

The Dancing Wings 1800mm Cub, also sold by Banggood, has even less in it's manual. The link for both of these is below. I also attached a copy of the wing pictures in the 1200mm manual. Both manuals can be found via the links below.

Hi, thankyou, yes I found a few people with the same issues on here and managed to work it out. For anyone else about to build this kit be aware there are 3 types of wing spar in the kit. The thinner spars are for where the top balsa boards go on the wing.

More work on the wings and changed the standard foam wheels for larger rubber ones.

It's looking good, I think the cheap foam wheels would be fine, and lighter. They look quite cheap, I admit, and the rubber ones are closer in shape to scale, add some Cub hubcaps and your set. Cut the bottom out of 2 mini soda cans, cut to the right size, and paint them to suit the finished scheme. They will make ANY wheels look a lot better, just glue with a few dabs of hotglue onto the wheeel hub , then if needed they can be prised off with a screwdriver if you need to fix or change a wheel.

I think the rubber wheels look loads better, might try and do your hubcap suggestion.

Some more progress over the weekend.
