Fires in the Santa Clarita, Castaic area have closed I-5 north.

Getting out of Southern California may be problematic tomorrow

Castaic Fire

I drove by at 3:30 before the highway was closed. Felt the heat from the fire.

After review/correction of scores, the correct files are now attached. Please be aware that there is still one score that is pending at this time.

The Overall and Team Results as of Rounds 1 - 8. Great day of flying today, just about picture perfect. As always choices made had an impact on some flights. Pilot's Meeting Sunday at 8am, 1st Group at 8:30am.

C'mon out and watch, it's a great show, and tomorrow s/b exciting as the wind is forecast to start coming up!

Fri Low Launch Challenge results

Had another great low launch challenge on Friday. 10 pilots put in their $5 in the winner-take-all pot. This is the third one we have done in the western region this season; it is clear guys have refined their low launch strategies. They are getting lower launches each time we do this. The rules used were in post #35 in this thread .

Results: congrats to Bob McGowan for the LL win and all the pot cash with a hard-to-beat 7.3 m launch! Rundown of the participants results follows:

Bob McGowan - 7.3m
Ali Khani - 8.4m
Lenny Keer- 9.9m
Rick Johnston - 11m
Tim Johnson - 15.1m
John Armstrong - 15.8
Chris Bajorek - 16.2m
Brad Juntunen - 16.3m
Bobby Burson - 23m
Lou Fox - 26m

2019 Nort-South Challenge - Overall & Team Results - Rnd 1-11

Conditions this morning...Challenging for everyone, very challenging. Winds about 7-10 gusting to 17, and COLD!

At Rnd 11, things warmed up, and we had some real lift to work with! Good flying by all!!!

Great Video!

Well the North/South Challenge is in the books and all I can say is...the North rules!!!

I'm not much on commentary but this weekend was so much fun I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to give the South a hard time about LOSING the resurrected North/South Challenge to the NORTH at the best sailplane soaring site...CVRC, Visalia.

A great friend of CVRC, Sid Licea, spent Sunday afternoon with us and took a fantastic video of some of the flying action. Also captured for all of posterity the awards ceremony with CD Sandy Smith and Fred Weaver presiding and the South's John Armstrong presenting the trophy to the North's Bob McGowan.
North Wins F5J Challenge (23 min 11 sec)

Hope this is the beginning of a great tradition in soaring competition!

Thanks,

Tim

What Tim didn't mention was that the Southern Eagles were leading both days only to lose grip in the last round of the contest. Lesson learned: wild turkeys are smarter than you might think and don't bring a knife to a turkey shoot.!!?? What a fun tme. See you guys next year.
