Dash-8-100

Hey guys,
Today I took my Dash8 up for the first time. It was the toughest flight I have ever experienced due to a few things such as being tail heavy, airfield being far too small, the plane being far too heavy and fast. But I am extremely great full to have it back on the ground in one piece!

I have decided the model is in need of severe weight reduction and flaps. An electric conversion is now underway!

Length=56.5”
WS= 76.25”
AUW=13.14lbs

I was lucky enough to purchase the model from an older gentleman. It is a scale replica of a Dash-8-100. It has a molded FG fuse/Vstab. The wings centre section is balsa with balsa covering. Outer wing is foam core with balsa sheeting.

I have removed the nitro related components which come out to a total weight of 1876g= 4.13lbs including fully fuelled tanks.

I’m aiming for a weight saving of close to 3lbs.

I am seeking some advice as to which motors would work best for a model of this size? I already own two 60a ESCs with 80a burst. I also have 3s 2200mah 40-50c lipos I was thinking of running paired up but I’m thinking 4s would be better.? Would the E-flite 10: 900kv EFLM17553 be a good choice for a 4 blade prop?

Any help/input would be great!

Thanks,
Jake

Which props?

I've found that 4s works great for twins of about 80 inch

Thanks.

I would like to run 4-blade props. The size would depend on the motor and battery choice. I would also like to find chrome spinners to finish them off.

Perhaps take a look at this for a 4-blade prop.

There are a few older videos that describe the VarioPROP.

Very nice Dash 8. Please make room for messages in your PM file. Your folders are full.

I hope you can make a saving of 3 lbs. Electric conversions don't normally give a huge saving in weight. Any saving will of course help but I fear it wont fundamentally change the way it flies.
The smooth nature of electric power allows a plane to be built lighter in the first place.

My Dash 8 Q400 is a bit smaller with a span of 61" but the fuselage is longer at 76". As a result it had to be built 'silly' light (2 lbs all up!) to fly at a reasonable speed which it does using very modest power.
