AeroTetris A320 Build
Always wanted to build an EDF airliner but could never find one that really appealed to me until I stumbled across the Aerotetris website. A quick scroll through the models and I came across an Airbus A320 kit. A few messages later and the kit was in the post winging it's way to the UK.
I should point out now that the kits are supplied as sheets of pre-cut Styrofoam with a pdf plan of the parts, it's up to you to assemble and rc the models which adds to the enjoyment because you really have a free hand. Initial progress has most of the fuselage assembled, Rudder and elevators and some rough sanding to smooth out the joins. I'm using FMS 80mm EDF units to power the jet which are an almost perfect fit for the engine nacelles. These will be controller by two HobbyWing V5 110amp FlyFun ESCs. Power will be provided by two 6s 5000mAh batteries connected in parallel I think or maybe one 10000mAh not sure yet.. |

Main fuselage sections completed I moved onto the Rudder and elevator assemblies. I removed sections of foam for the rudder and elevator control surfaces and replaced with equivalent sections cut from 10mmx100mm balsa sheet. I also added trailing edges cut from 8mmx10mm balsa for strength and hinge connection.
To complete I need to cut ply plates for the rudder and elevators and channels for carbon spares. I also have to cut out a recess in the rudder for the servo. ImagesView all Images in thread |

Moving on to the wing retract mounting have been musing on this for a while luckily the internet is full of useful and not so useful information but in this instance it has proved useful. So enough of the waffle, mounting wise I'm going with the following:
1) 2mm ply plate glued to the outside edge of the root rib. 2) 2mm ply plates glued to the inside edge of ribs 1 & 2. 3) 12mmx12mm beech engine bears glued to the play plates on rib2 and rib 1. 4) 6mm carbon rods glued to outside edge of the engine bears passing through all ply plates and then into carbon tubes glued in the fuselage. My hope is the the ply plates will help strengthen the foam around the retracts and the carbon rods will take most of the load generated from landing and take off. |

Fuselage wing mounting considerations and alignment, decided to offer up the root rib to get a feel for mounting alignment and setting of the carbon tube for the main carbon wing spar.

One last update engine nacelles modified for the 80mm edf units. Again 12mm x 12mm beech engine bears and a carbon fibre wrap for strength. I've sanded a slight bevel on the intake lips so the units sit snug.
Waiting for some 3mm self tapping screws and 12awg wire before I can complete the engine nacelles. Not forgetting the addition of trust tubes as well. |

Back to work on the build, FMS 80mm EDF units mounted in the nacelles next step mount the front foam nacelle ring to complete the installation and then work on the rear section of the nacelle.

Engine nacelles are finally complete awaiting a little surface filling and glassing. Overall very happy with the result I decided on a rear access hatch time will tell if this was a good idea or not. The access hatch will be secured using rare Earth neodymium magnets
My reason for this was to maintain as much structural strength around the EDF mounting as possible. |
