Modifying a 85kg MTOW UAV to electric

Hi,
I'm very interested on purchasing a BIG VTOL plane and powering it electrically, but i'm not sure what kind of power setup including prop can run it.

that is the plane: https://www.muginuav.com/product/mug...white-version/

I have found this motor https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-...ner-motor.html but i think it wont be nearly as powerfull is it should be..

I also heard about this series of motors, especially the Neutronics 8057: 22,500-45,000 watt which might be stronger but still not sure if enough and what proper prop would fit (https://neumotors.com/neumotors-8000...00-6000-watts/).

Thanks in advance!
Lior

I would suggest also looking in the --- UAV - Unmanned Aerial Vehicles forum.

The Mugin 4450 Super Huge VTOL UAV appears to be more for commercial use and long flight times, you may not achieve the long flight time using electric power in place of the IC engine.

I can settle on 1.5-3 hours of flight time instead of the original 7 hours.
But the question is if it's even possible, and if so- how?

The suggested motor for this model by mugin is the DLE 170cc engine (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32285579755.html)

i believe i need about 1:2 W/T ratios so its about 45kg of thrust like this DLE.

Thanks for your help

Way outside my knowledge, I wouldn't class that sort of drone in the 'model plane' range.

The Turnigy Rotax 150cc electric motor will turn a 30"+ diameter prop, (checked the HK reviews).

Once flying 'on the wing', you don't need an enormous amount of power. Gliders don't really require any, though the MTOW is not exactly an efficient glider design.

The VTOL motors will draw a considerable amount of power to lift the 25kg model plus any additional payload, all reducing the flight time battery capacity.

Bigger capacity batteries also add more dead weight, which requires more power to sustain flight, can be a vicious circle.

I would suggest asking in the UAV forum I linked, but importantly setting out the flight requirements, e.g. expected payload weight, flight time, flight height, and that it needs VTOL or STOL capability, (why not catapult launch and save on the VTOL motors ?), and basically as much information on the project you can give. There are probably alternatives to the Mugin 4450.

People like/need as much informations as possible to make useful answers.

Just thought of a possible major problem with converting the forward flight to electric power.

You need to retain enough safe battery capacity for the vertical landing motors. get it wrong and ..... wooops!

Hi Lior, we still recommend to use the gasoline to power the Mugin 4450 VTOL.
