Question

Sound module

Hey guys,
Does someone produce a sound module that you can upload your own sounds to?
I have a Great Lakes freighter and there is a specific horn sound that I want for it ,that I havenít been able to find on the preprogrammed modules.
Thank you very much in advance.

You can get an Arduino kit & do yourself or order a Das Micro unit with programable cable. Many guys in the local clubs here go with that approach to keep cost low for custom sounds for their RC boats, crawlers & tanks.

Das Micro

Good tutorial / Q&A for on Das Micro at the following links:

Other possibilities you'll want to consider that offer very good LOUD sound. I use the GT Power myself.

ESS-Pro http://www.sensehobby.com/products/essone/

Both are PNP & much cheaper than other commercial units on the market. GT Power makes both of the above; they are soon to upload marine & boat sound effects for their units & are receptive to uploading sounds from customers if you post on their message board or send Bill an email. BTW, I'm the one pushing them for the marine sounds.

Thanks for this. The Dasmikro looks like a pretty nice setup. What I find funny is the person talking in the Banggood video sounds like a Chinese person talking with an Irish accent.

For a simple, one-off sound unit, there are greeting card modules, often called "recordable voice audio module". Really, really cheap. You can record your "message" on to it, in your case the sound you want, hook it to a switcher or a micro switch on a servo arm, lose the supplied speaker and feed the output to an audio amp to drive a speaker that you will hear.

If you like schematics and soldering, look up the ISD Chipcorder. In chip form, this is what's inside many of those recordable cards and such. You can get them in DIP packages, easier to work with. It's also what's used in the RAM recordable sound unit.

Tricky if you need continuous (looping) sounds, you'll often get a click at the loop point... maybe better for play-it-once sounds.
I used them in my Hicks engine and in the Baywatch boat.

Thank you very much for your help and information on this project.
I want to build the Dumas Great Lakes freighter as the Alpena but I want it to have the horn sound of the James R Barker freighter.
Time to do some shopping.
Thank you,
John

FYI on my earlier thread I posted about the BBC's sound effects library. The boat section alone comprises 303 different sounds that can be sampled & downloaded.

An awful lot of years ago when I wanted a horn sound, I used a chip from ISD. They have progressed a lot since then, specs going up and prices coming down, but there is still quite a bit of building around them to do. I started using the greeting card recorders because it was cheaper to buy one of them, ready built and needing very little extra work, than to buy just one ISD IC as a retail customer.
Both good for one shot sounds like a ship siren, anything more you need to look at the range of very much more comprehensive sound units, which have prices to match their abilities.
A possible downside of the card module is that it is self powered from an on-board built in battery. Not a big disadvantage as it is likely to be almost everlasting. in use.
