Timber Crash Analysis and Mod Reports

Did my first solo on Aug 10th thanks to Dave and Bob, two out of town flyers who happened to be at my field and where nice enough to give me some pointers. Dave co piloted with me for a few flights after Ben, our local "trainer" let me take the club trainer up the previous weekend.

After I had Dan take up the plane and trim it out, I landed it after I few it under his supervision. The first sideways bounce began to tear apart the undercarriage. Did modifications using 1/8 music wire to replace front strut utilizing the front float mount slot and a coat hanger to provide back support attached to the rear float mount. Used wire and solder to attach front of coat hanger to front struts and then used nitro fuel tubing to act as shock absorber between front struts.

My first task is to practice touch and go's so I can get over being so paranoid of landing, particularly in the wind. Most of my flying has been in 10 mph with a Timber 1.5m foamy arf.

4-5th flight
Crash 1
- Cartwheel (Minor slow speed) - disoriented as to where the end of the runway was making a N. bound approach, plane does a cartwheel before the end of the runway due to stalling about 3-4' off the ground.
Repairs - Landing gear had to be straightened.

Analysis - better to land smoothly in the grass off the field than to push getting onto the runway, better for the plane and my nerves. New gear holding up well.

8th flight
Crash #2
- Nose Plant (unknown - likely moderate speed and attitude ) - I loose sight of the plane doing down as it has gotten too far from the field and I get disoriented, minimal damage.
Repairs replaced prop, straightened landing gear.

Analysis - Get the plane back towards the field sooner, stay calm when it starts getting away from you, correct slowly, use safe mode if necessary. Gear continues to prove to be tough.

12th flight (tried 11x8 electric prop vs. 3 bladed 11x7.5 or 11x8)
Crash #3 - Major nose & gear plant (Higher speed 45 degree) - I am still trying to figure out what happened, I basically wanted to hit the runway and way trying to fly the plane down to it but it was in safe mode and it was not responding well to aileron controls. It feels like I flew the plane into the ground but I'm fuzzy as to how (maybe I don't want to remember and I'm reacting to the damage to my plane).
Undercarriage torn from bottom of airplane, noticed wing tip damage (unsure if from this event or prior). STOL rib lost a support on the end.
Repairs / mods - Removed STOL rib from both wings. Replaced prop (went back to 11x8 3 blade). Repaired undercarriage using epoxy, had to repair plastic gear support plate on Left side of plane. Repaired cracked foam with foam cure, Used 5 min epoxy to repair plastic and reinsert into fuse. Straightened landing gear.

Analysis - Too much ballooning with relatively slight variations in wind, the plane wants to climb in the wind, then stalls, then drops like a rock. Practice stall recovery in sim, keep practicing orientation as to when to start turning back toward runway and get over the center line.
Thoroughly check the crash site and the airplane for any missing pieces before you move the plane from the site. I could not find the missing STOL bar support. STOL bars may have been contributing to stalling due to flying too slow or ballooning up when trying to land. Considered doing a Velcro mod to the gear for shear away but seemed quicker to glue the undercarriage back in. Repaired wing tips but they need reinforcement. Not sure if the uneven surface on the leading edge of the wings will be an issue or not. May need to do some fill in.

Landing gear mod

Using the mount for the floats and the attachment for the float as I guide I made this.
