2019 US F3J Team Selection

2019 US F3J Team Selection hosted by the Eastern Soaring League
HorseFeathers Airport, Warrenton, VA

The date is October 5th, 6th, and 7th for the actual competition. October 4th will be reserved for practice, setup, and registration.

The host organization for this event is the Eastern Soaring League (ESL). Instantiated in 1978, the ESL has provided top-notch R/C soaring competition for the Mid-Atlantic and New England region. Currently, the ESL has 3 divisions including Unlimited Thermal Duration, Electric Sailplane, and Hand Launch divisions and sanctions contests from North Carolina to Massachusetts.

The site is referred to HorseFeathers Airport located in Warrenton, VA. Horse Feathers is a private airport that has been in existence for many years. It is owned by Frank Thompson who has allowed R/C soaring at this location for more than 25 years. A small group of flyers use this location regularly and it is used to host 2 ESL Unlimited TD events each year. The field is approximately 3,000 feet long by 1,400 feet wide. The primary axis is oriented NNW/SSE. Warrenton is located approximately 35 miles SW of Washington, DC. See Figure 1 for an aerial view of Horse Feathers Airport.

The closest major airport is Dulles International airport which his 34 miles away. Rush hour traffic could make this trip take several hours. However, off-hour travel is usually very benign. Warrenton is also about 30 miles from I-95 as well as I-81

The town of Warrenton is approximately 5 miles from the competition site. Warrenton is a suburb town of Washington, DC, which is approximately 30 miles away. There are plenty of accommodations in Warrenton including many major hotels.
1) Hampton Inn: (540) 349-4200
2) Red Roof Inn: (540) 347-4141
3) Baymont Inn: (540) 216-0720
4) Warrenton Holiday Inn Express: (540) 341-3461
5) And many others…..

Smart phone video of landings will be admitted to help adjudicate late landing calls. It is strongly encouraged that all competitors video landings as much as possible. Smartphone video with audio is acceptable and recommended. There are only relatively minor low-flight restrictions involving horse stables/pastures in the vicinity.
Primitive camping is allowed. Porta potty on field.

Question: Are we flying the FAI minimum wing loading? If we are how are we going to process/weigh models? I'm wondering how much emphasis I need to be putting in on insuring I'm measuring to a decent degree of accuracy.

Kerry, it would be nice to be able to weigh our planes on your scales before the contest to make sure they weigh the correct amount. As we all know, some of our scales are not as accurate as they could/should be.

Slightly different juniors are going to fly now? If so, will they have their own flight groups or will they be intermixed with the seniors?

OK as we get closer to the contest any Junior that is thinking about trying out for the team NOW is the time to sign up!
Junior registration will close Sunday Sep 15. If there are no other Juniors that sign up then we only have three juniors our precedent is they make the team as long as they attend an F3J event before the Worlds to keep their competency up.

Quite a few F3j pilots were out at the Skip Schow Memorial ESL contest at Horsefeathers this weekend. I helped a few get their winches adjusted.

Registration is closed! The team selection will be modified to meet the team select rules. Only 1 Junior per team (for 3 teams) and they will fly in their own group.
The matrix will be generated and sent to pilots later this week.
If you are not on a team and want some control about who you fly with now is the time to act.
I have a 10Kg/.1g scale with cradle that will be checked with Josh's calibrated weights. If there is any wind/breeze we may need to transport planes to the hanger.
