Micro Plane From Blimp Parts

I got bored so I took apart a broken R/C blimp and made a micro 12" plane out of it. The power systems from the blimp provide proportional 2 channel control via thrust differential between the two motors. That black hump on top is the battery bay. It holds a CR123A lithium camera battery, which I have yet to go pick up from CVS.

I'll have the battery shortly so I can fly the plane.

I had one of those! I got mine for $6 when Zany Brainy went out of buisness :-) You may find that the CR123 is not only too heavy but to pricey :-)

It is not too heavy, the total flying wieght is 1.5oz. CVS sells the batteries for $4. It's not bad.

Time wounds all heels.
1.5oz is pretty heavy on a 12" ws frame. Its gonna be a bullet, and proportional steering may not be enough. The CR123 battery is extremely heavy compared to small LiPo packs. If your local hobby carries WAMF gear, you can get a 150mAH for less than $10, and its about 4.5g. If you dont mind ordering online, most of the micro-distributors have even smaller batteries at good prices. For that wingspan you probably want to shoot for a 20-25g AUW or less if you can figure out how to get there. It sounds hard, and sadly it is. This micro stuff aint easy. Remember, your blimp flew that gear at essentially 0g. Helium helps a lot.

Good luck!

I'm goint to build a bigger frame, I tried to fly it but it creates too little lift.

There are cheaper sources of CR123 batteries, like $1.25 from http://www.batterystation.com (though of course postage will eat the difference if you don't use a lot of them.)
A CR2 battery has similar power capability in a slightly smaller and lighter package. I always wanted to try a CR2 in one of those blimps; too bad I missed all the sales.

But, oh, the horror...

I built a larger airframe from a foam airliner kite. It flies, but is a bit underpowered. I think I'll tow launch it from a bike.
