Sources for micro motors

Hello,

I noticed some of you Ezoners trying to find very small motors to power your small (13" span Peanut scale or under) models.

Smoovy and Namiki (Swiss and Japanese firm, respectively) are two large makers. New motors can cost as much as $100 from the smoovy site. You don't need to pay this. Look at the Solarbotics link and find one for a lot less.

Discount surplus electronics places like all electronics, digikey and solarbotics often have the same motors you end up paying ten times for in other places. Most micromotors are used exclusively in the PC hardware industry in Hard-drives, Magneto-Optical or ZIP drives and in some cases portable printers. If you can find some trashed drives, these may contain motors.

They look very similar to pager motors?

Yes those brassy or black colored cylinders in front of the motors are planetary gearboxes. The gearboxes come in a choice of 1:25 or 1:125 and have a 60~70% efficiency level.

The difference between these and the regular pager motors are that most pager motors will have a maximum voltage rating of 1.3v (only a single AA cell in a pager), whereas the smoovy ones will operate between 4~10v.

There are other spec sheets at the smoovy website and even a link to buy, if you prefer.

I've also seen a small motor (smaller than a pager motor) being sold by Northwest Short Line, the model RR vendor. Any model RR shop should have these.

Hope this helps,

Bill

The main difference between the smoovy motors and the regular pager motors is that the smoovy is brushless.
