RDRC Blast From the Past Vintage Fly-In - RCGroups Event Coverage

It's awesome to see how far our hobby has come!

R/C nostalgia was all around in Raleigh, NC last weekend

The 3rd annual Blast from the Past Vintage Fly-In put another great event in the books this past weekend. Event CD and Vintage Radio Control Society ambassador, Herbby Alford of RDRC in Raleigh, NC, reported over 60 pilots attended from all over the Southeast. Everything flown at the event was built, designed or flown before 1984; a time when every plane at the field was built by hand, with not one exactly the same as another. No foam models or ARFs to be seen here! Everything at this event was stick-built, hand-covered and a relic of a time gone by. Some had been converted to electric and/or 2.4gHz, but they were still relics not often seen on the flight-lines of today. An impressive display of antique transmitters was also on display.

Temps in the low 80's with a light breeze proved to make a beautiful day and kept the flight-line busy. The good ole' 72mHz pinbox was dusted off, and the loud buzzing of tiny Cox engines were heard whirring around the 3 control-line circles. In addition to the powered models, free-flight airplanes were given a chance to float in the breeze while everyone was enjoying their hotdog lunches. Unfortunately, the breeze pushed one Cox-powered free flight plane into the top of a tree. I'm not sure if he was able to recover it. After free-flight, we all huddled on the runway for a group shot.

A few impartial judges walked the pits in search of a winner for 6 categories: Best Antique, Best Old Timer, Best Pioneer, Best Classic, Best Nostalgia, Best Control Line, Best Dave Platt Design, Best Vintage Flight Box and Best Vintage Transmitter. In addition, all registered pilots were put in a drawing for an array of great prizes, including two grand prizes; a lovely Sig Hog and a beautiful King Kobra, both complete with new engines and servos! The winners were chosen by a nitro-powered ball shuffler designed by Herbby himself. And new this year, winners of free-flight and control-line prizes were drawn with a gas-powered roulette wheel! The grand prize for this group was a very nicely built control-line model.

The winners were:

  • Best Antique - John Bergsmith w/ 1937 Dallaire Sportster
  • Best Old Timer - Joe Walton w/ 1937 Cloudster
  • Best Pioneer - Bobby Russel w/ 1954 CavU
  • Best Classic - Bob Harris w/ 1955 Tri-Square
  • Best Nostalgia - Duane Wilson w/ 1967 King Altair
  • Best Control Line - Bill Wagner w/ 1949 Ole Tiger
  • Best Dave Platt Design - Al Strickland w/ 1974 Spitfire
  • Best Vintage Flight Box - Herbby Alford w/ 1975 Wood Craft Masters Box
  • Best Vintage Transmitter - Clyde Long w/ Control Air Mule

Herbby and the rest of RDRC invites you to join them on another trip down memory lane at next years Vintage Fly-In! They also have a control-line only event coming up this November 9-10th. Stay tuned to rd-rc.com for next years' dates, or email [email protected] to get added to his email list for the event!

This is a FANTASTIC event put on by a great group of people and club. The club had 3- 70' controline circles that were busy all day. The R/C area has a paved runway with grass alternate to fly off of. I look forward to this event every year. …..Gene
