SC2 2019 - Southern California Soaring Clubs' Official Thread
Someone had to do it...
The 3rd Sc2 event this year on Jun 23rd is confirmed to be held at T.O.S.S Bertram [email protected] Sapwi Trails...more details/flyer coming soon...unfortunately we are unable to have ALES/5J models at our field but please come out anyway. Even if its far, please show up, you can bet ill be at your home field when you host. TOSS would like to rehash a woodie/RES class so bring them along...speaking of which, we have been in talks about hosting a F3res contest this season, anyone interested? The last event was 24, or so, pilots strong (not bad). Lets match or beat that turnout, the more the merrier, right? See you there, RIGHT? Make Soaring Great Again! Just an update, and a bump i suppose....we are a go! Flyer will show up soon....the only way it's going.to be a success is if you show up, so please do...I mean, how.much longer are we going to be able to have soaring contests? Hopefully for years to come but who knows, so lets make them count while we still can ...there is running water and bathrooms on site, plenty of parking, hiking trails for the wives, playgrounds and bike tracks for the kids. And a 50'x50' artifical turf landing pad so no worries about scuffing up that contest ship before Fall Fest....you're fresh out of excuses so we'll see you at TOSS on the 23rd....
Rumor has it the rounds might be 5, 10, 10, 10,. ..50pt. Long tape, which will be confirmed in the next few days, so don't forget to pack those thermalling skills. Remember NO PROPS, winch launch ONLY. Skegs are allowed but not recommended as the turf makes for a brick wall stop, don't want to see any broken booms. -Make Soaring Great Again- |

FYI, I just read in the latest HSS newsletter that a 200 foot altitude will be strictly enforced. RIP Harbor SOARING Society. It’s been fun, but now it’s done. Thanks to all the drone idiots.

The proximity to John Wayne is just one of the many problems they have, the May 17th FAA statement has many clubs reacting. It’s a good thing TOSS doesn’t allow electrics, please keep it that way, or you will go the way of El Dorado and many other clubs.

If I read their newsletter correctly, the FAA specifically imposed the cap on the field...perhaps some blanket limitation based on distance from SNA? Unfortunate no matter how it came to be, but one undertone in the newsletter seems to be no club support for soaring (terms such as "lack of support" and "no interest" appear more than once.)

Skegs ARE allowed, the 'carpet' is actually artifical turf....heres the thing, with a shark tooth style skeg your plane will stop,..NOW! Booms and joiners have been broken...a dull skeg or better yet a rubbery skid is much safer...proceed at your own risk

If you don't want TOSS to have a lot of holes in the Turf/Carpet someone from their organization better define and post what "Carpet friendly" means otherwise anything goes.

...Anything goes, not 100% sure why the flyer says Carpet friendly...the turf doesn't tear however Carbon, will and has..The turf grabs the skeg like velcro...like dorking into concrete...if your coming in hot, racing the clock, your plane may lose

Alright glider guiders, tomorrow is the day...charge those batteries...were going to TRY and have the winches up by 8 so if anyone needs a trim flight show up early....we had a field clean up day today to clear the winch lanes of potential line snags so we can run a smooth as silk contest tomorrow so come out and make our efforts worth it...if tomorrow is anything like today, or the past 3 weekends its going to be real nice....marine layer early, starts breaking up around 9, quickly followed by big, BIG air...hope to see you all in the morning....

You don't want to miss this one. Great weather, great field. Artificial turf landing area. It will be worth the drive, Mike

Well, Sc2 round 3 is in the books. There were 16 pilots today..We hope everyone made it home safe and in a fairly reasonable time. Thankyou all for making the haul out to TO..I think we can all agree that there weren't any gimmies today, this was a 'Soaring' contest...5-10 mph (?) steady breeze and sometimes ellusive lift meant you had to do a little work for those 10's.....Thanks Mike for CD'ing and all those involved for making today happen..Congratulations to the podiums and special thanks to Martin for running retriever the whole time.. here are some pics...
