One in Five U.S. Companies Say China Has Stolen Their Intellectual Property

A new CNBC poll finds that one in five corporations say China has stolen their intellectual property within the last year.

Intellectual property, or IP, theft has been a major contentious issue in trade talks between the Trump administration and China.

IP theft—use of patents, trade secrets, trademarks, and copyrights without permission—may seem dry to many. But it represents big money. Intangible assets, which include IP, make up 80% of the value of S&P 500 companies, according to the Harvard Business Review.

IP theft may not seem the same as taking physical property, but it represents either a loss of opportunity or of competitive advantage that reduces the money a company could have made. The U.S. Trade Representative has estimated the annual loss to China at between $225 billion and $600 billion, according to CNN.

There are different ways Chinese companies reportedly obtain U.S. IP. Corporate espionage and cyberattacks are two, according to Axios. But so is forced technology transfers, in which the Chinese government compels companies investing in China to provide IP details and licenses.

The Trump administration has delayed additional tariffs that were supposed to go into effect March 1 because of progress in trade talks. But it is unclear whether there has been any progress on IP issues.

A lot of these are people in China, making knock offs of goods made in China for American Companies. Probably in the same manufacturing facilities.

However, some modern Chinese scholars have opined that other Chinese inventions were perhaps more sophisticated and had a greater impact on Chinese civilization – the Four Great Inventions serve merely to highlight the technological interaction between East and West.

What in the Hell does that have to do with the Chinese theft of intellectual properties?

The seemingly relative ease at which data seems to get breached leaves me to think there is more involved than just evil chinese.

Yes, it's a BIG problem. We bought it by letting the Chinese make so much stuff for us. I'm old enough to remember a time when you could buy almost anything you wanted or needed made in the US, even cameras, electronics and timepieces.

I must say, I cannot say much. I've taken advantage of very inexpensive RC multirotor and FPV technology from China like a fat rat. Some of it, like flight controllers and racing frames, are blatant rip-offs.

So, while I want IP theft curtailed, pretty much all of us has taken advantage of it somewhere for something.

A segment of my server log. For the past month I've had a computer in China working over my server.
If this is a friend we don't need any enemies. It's trying to access my server's control panel.
Mind you there is nothing on the server but my old site, I keep it for my email address.

We don't need China, we can buy the same crap from India or a dozen other countries.

Note the 403 codes... I blocked the IP. and it still keeps trying.

I am rather surprised at the proportion of companies. There are, I find something in excess of 18 million companies in the USA with 16 million employing between 1 and 24 employees. I would doubt that many of these would own patents that could be taken advantage of by the Chinese.

In the west and RC world one wants their product to be popular, but not TOO popular to the point the Chinese take notice, replicate it and produce it a small fraction of the cost and wipe you out.

"IP theft—use of patents, trade secrets, trademarks, and copyrights without permission"

When you include trade secrets and trademarks/copyrights, that pool gets much bigger.

The OP article also says corporations. That could be leaving out LLCs, sole proprietors, etc, which would narrow the grouping.

No one is saying chinese people are stupid, they are some of, if not the, most intelligent people in the world.

They should put their talents to use making new innovations, not just stealing from others.

The poster of the OP chose to say companies and that was what my reply was based on.
