Build Log

F-35 Lightning 70mm EDF by Freewing

Freewing just came out with a new 70mm F-35 Lightning,

https://www.rc-castle.com/index.php?...ch&search=F-35

https://www.motionrc.eu/collections/...mm-edf-jet-arp

I ordered the Arf-plus version so will install my own power system

The wingspan is about the same as the old v1 and v2 versions which had thrust vectoring and was considerably lighter :

https://www.motionrc.com/products/fr...mm-edf-jet-pnp

A bunch of nice pictures have appeared here :

https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/thum...one&starter=no

Since the wingspan on the model is 82cm, whereas the original has a wingspan of 10.7m (F-35A/B) :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockhe...5_Lightning_II

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_Martin_X-35

the scale is approximately 1: 13.0 or ~13-th scale.

Mine will be re-painted in the Navy scheme for better visibility, I will paint most of the decals myself ...

Or the (somewhat less powerful) FMS 70mm inrunner (2860, 1850kv) fan, very smooth at ~1500 W and 240g weight,

From this listing of spare parts it is unclear how large the cheese grater intake is,

Interestingly enough the stock Freewing 240g fan comes with a more efficient inrunner motor (het oem?) .

https://www.rc-castle.com/index.php?...roduct_id=7558

The advertised power is approximately 70A x 22V = 1550W ...

Unfortunately this F-35 seems a bit heavier than comparable 70mm jets :

Freewing F-35 70mm empty weight quoted without battery 1700g (2600g with 4500mAh battery ?? )

Freewing Hawk 70mm weight without battery 1450g (2010g with an RT 4500 pack)

The added extra half pound in weight on the F-35 is presumably due to all the added "scale" features added, such as many extra styrene parts, as well as the heavy semi-scale alum gear.

EDIT : My Roaring Top 4500mAh 6S batteries are ~670g :

Made some simple hubcaps out of styrene, similar to what I did on the new F/A-18c

Thomas B pointed out that the grey on the F-35 is FS 36170, which can be hard to match, but I did find one that is very close.

It is claimed by some that it has a bit of a metallic look to it, so Titanium silver can be added to it.

While waiting for the F-35 to get here, I programmed the radio (Futaba 14SG) for tailerons (ch1, ch2) and flaps (ch6).

In the Futaba radio settings this is a "model type" selection, as a flying wing with flaps.

It is my experience with these kind of jets (eg F-16) that the large fully-flying tailerons will provide tons of roll authority, so that the additional ailerons won't be needed.

Among other things, this will allow me later the option to close up the ailerons / flaps completely and fly it on tailerons only.

Getting nearer to the maiden ...

Recommended CG, battery weight and throws, according to manual :

[ Note that according to the location on the drawing and the overall scale, the CG location should be ~36mm, not 4mm, ahead of
the wing mount plastic square. ]

[ Freewing CG's are generally quite conservatives, so the actual best CG could be a few mm's behind that. ]

There is an ingenious guy in Florence Italy by the name of Moreno Lippi who managed to get a modified lightweight styrofoam F-35 to VTOL :
