Acid and aluminum don’t mingle for long. It will corrode and out if left for too long. Oxalic acid will probably only need a minute or two, and scrub with an old toothbrush.

I only left it in for a short time and kept monitoring it.

But I may have been premature in my concerns, as I looked again at the photos I took of the engine as received and it had gray cases. Then after the soak they turned dark. But after the acid soak they are pretty much back to the same gray as before, according to the photos.

Too many things going on in my head at one time, getting confused.... lol.
