2019 CVRC Bent Wing / WOODY

Another CVRC Bent Wing/WOODY event has drawn to a close. The field and the weather was unbelievable once again. We had light wind for the two days and the lift cycled through in the usual fashion. Our resident Red Tail that Joe nave named ďMaryĒ after he had his encounter in October was present again. She took to the air on a regular basis to let us know her nest was in process.

Friday was the ALES kickoff event with 5 rounds of 8 minutes. Itís a fun way to start the weekend and learn new things. The lift was light and several people found the cycles of sink. I took the ballast out of the 3.8 Explorer I was using which made working air much easier. Steve George used his E Pike Perfect SL and had no problem making his times against the ultra-light F5J models. I love watching his ALES flights with his Neu motor swinging a huge prop as he makes those sweeping right hand turns around the guys moving to the east to gain distance and altitude. Itís so cool to watch. With my new center panel from a midair in October and a dry weight of 43 ounces made my approaches a bit inconsistent. Pulling the flaps on the normal Explorer wing stopped it inflight. That really messed up my timing. I cannot imagine what the Big Flap version would do.

New this year was the additional round that Chris Platt added to Sunday. An 8 minute round was added as a reward for flying the others so quickly. WOW another 8 minute round. Iíd already checked out when the 10 minute was done. It seemed like all we did was back to back flying and timing. Last year I flew 2 classes and Iím pretty happy with one this year. My timer Jason George decided to fly cross country in the event and that made life exciting. We had to go get the truck four times when he landed off field to the east knowing we would not clear the lower basin filled with water. Next year he will have even more fun with the addition of 40 more acres being made into a settling pond. That will be a good thing for the CVRC group. No crops to the east will ever happen with that in place.

Steve flew his Atomic in the conditions that I designed it for. Visalia has a tendency to have light air in the morning rounds which causes long distances to be covered. Using the AG24 with a 3.5 meter span allowed Steve to travel east over the plowed section to find the first origin of a thermal and camp on it as it developed. Avaís and Eagles can do this as well yet the Atomic has much more area in the center panel. After watching him do this time after time Iíve come to the conclusion in WOODY nothing does it better and in open RES he is equal to the modern designs.

After years of not being seen there was a reappearance of Mark Smithís Thermal Wax. Mark had used this in the 70ís and 80ís on his wings and it freaked the competition out when he spoke of it. I told one of the Thousand Oaks guys I was using it and he mentioned he had a new product he was using. His was Don Northernís Stuff. I was intrigued by his product and thought there is no way it could be better than Markís. Steve George used Mark Smithís Thermal Wax it on his Atomic then I used it on my Ava Pro where we both went on to win our classes for the weekend. Art used Don Northernís Stuff and placed second to me in Open RES. I suppose Mark does have the better wax in hind sight!

It was wonderful to see all the guys again this weekend. I learned how to set up my F5J Throttle with Tim Johnson help and to also adjust the DLG I had been using with Art Chmielewski. For me that is what this hobby is all about. Sharing and learning.
