Keil Kraft or similar modols RC conversion?

Would it be possible to make it a slowflyer, or will it be too heavy? Similar real light RC planes available? |

If you like scratch building most Keil Kraft plans are on Outerzone:
https://outerzone.co.uk/search/results.asp?page=1 "Frog" also has many R/C convertible plans on that site: http://www.houseoffrog.co.uk/senior_plans.htm http://www.houseoffrog.co.uk/junior_plans.htm https://outerzone.co.uk/search/results.asp?keyword=Frog Lot of goodies on Paul and Ralph Bradley's site: http://www.parmodels.com/home.html |

The Keil Kraft planes shown in your first two links are too large for micro equipment. I didn't check the other two links. But Vintage Model Company offers a number of updated laser-cut KK kits. This one looks just right for a micro slow flyer using, e.g., an AR6410L and the P-51 motor:
https://www.vintagemodelcompany.com/kk-achilles.html I'd guess that the fuselage would need some reinforcement where the motor and the receiver are to be mounted. Harvey |

WOW! Thanks for the great input! Thats some really helpfull stuff!
I know, the Keil models are a bit large, but I would use 2211 motors and around 5g servos in this case. The task is to get them as slow as possible. One of my favourites is the Sig Demoiselle. |

No need for 5gm servos. I use 2.5gm and smaller in models up to 1m span, which would be fine for these models as they're basically slow flyers. Given that the cut balsa parts of those designs are basically just wing ribs, I'd print a plan from outerzone and scratch build. As a scratch builder, I figure if I'm not getting more than a few balsa parts that I can't easily make, then why pay for it.

There are these 2 Demoiselle plans on Outerzone
The W Mooney one https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=2659 I built it.. but It's Not a good plan imo ..readily apparent once bits of balsa start being glued together This 28" one ? https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=3695 Not overly scale but then neither is the Sig one Both can be printed out scaled to whatever size pleases.. There's no reason why some models couldn't be converted. The XK A800 is an 800mm Wingspan glider/warmliner that uses 1.9gram servos with an 18gram brushed motor. The Wltoys F959 is a similar sized glider that uses an RX board with 2 on board servos which I added ailerons via 2x1.9gram servos . Both planes fly relatively well but could do with brushless motor upgrades.

There's no issue with converting the aircraft you're picking to RC-I've done a similar conversion- a R/N Super Snooper years ago back in the days of brushed IPS motors and 8 gram servos- flew beautifully. (That was a bit bigger than what you're picking- about 1 meter span.) Often an RC conversion will be lighter than the original FF version because the rubber motor can make up 25-33% of the weight of the airframe.
A brick system will work fine- the servos are strong enough to handle an airplane that size as long as the surfaces don't bind. The challenge is that you'll probably want a bit more power- I'm guessing at something in the 10-15 watt range swinging a 6-7" prop should work nicely. But you don't need a brick- just use a couple of small servos and an rx will be fine. You won't notice a couple of grams extra weight on those airplanes- odds are they're going to be at least 50 grams flying weight for the smallest. The stock Champ motor will handle an airplane up to 40 grams- dunno about the slightly more powerful P-51 setup. Might work- just make sure you can upgrade the motor if needed. Sam |
