Are LiPo's usable in cold temps?


[ As I wait for my first plane to use LiPo's to arrive a sickening feeling has occurred. That is, will temps of ~20 degrees Farenheit ground me. My experience with NiMh batteries in winter use has been very favorable with only moderate power losses even though some of the "gloomers and doomers" would leave you to believe that a significant power loss would occur. Anyway, if my expectations were to just have fun flying and not to set speed records can I expect to use LiPo batteries in cold temps? I, of course, keep batteries in an inside pocket to keep warm until just prior to use. Thanks

Keeping them warm until use may work but you will need to push them a little hard so they can create more heat. all in all 30 deg F is a boarderline call.

I've flown several times at 20 Degrees F this winter, and performance has been spectacular. My Parkshark is EPS foam so not much heat loss through the fuselage walls. Unless your pack is hanging out in the breeze and you are barely running above idle, you should have no problems..

Thanks for the info. Can LiPo's stored inside spotaneously combust? I know Leonard Nimoy would say yes, but in the real world?

That's a tough question.. my only failed pack was due to a faulty charger..it put too much voltage in...Result: pack swelled, then ignited after I slit it open with an X-Acto knife. This was 2 years ago B4 all the safety warnings got standardized!
Seems like the only packs that can combust are damaged ones - like ones that took a good smashing at the flying field or ones that have way too much volatge in them...
