DLG travel boxes, what material do use? How to build it?

I'm getting ready for the WC in Hungary but I don't have a box for my models yet, so I am looking into the best way and the best material to build it now.

A while ago I was familiar with a honeycomb like plastic sheet that is called "con pearl", it is very lightweight and extremely durable.
The problem with it is that it is quite expensive, hard to get in Canada and requires special tools to attach 2 separate pieces together (because of it's hollow structure).

The obvious option is to use 0.25" plywood, but it's pretty heavy and I'm afraid that the workers at the airport will toss it around to much.

The box itself is meant to hold 5 Vortex 2 piece wing models, similar to whag Roy Dor did for his model box in the attached pictures.

So please let me know what you think and suggest.

Eitan.

DLG Travel Cases

Eitan,
Have you looked into musical instrument / equipment cases? Here is an example, they also make custom cases.
http://hafercase.com/custom-cases/mu...ent-cases.html
Here is another good fabricator:
https://www.roadcasesusa.com/amps-he...-custom-cases/

Typical costs I have seen are $250 - $450. I think this is pretty cheap insurance for $7K worth of airplanes and gear.

Best of luck to you at the Worlds, try and keep our friend D. Webb out of trouble

The price is very reasonable... I will definitely look into it.
As for Webb, His wife is there to keep him out of trouble, I'm there to make him drunk!

coraplast "box" liner inside a #3 sport tube. Will fit 5 DLGs and is indestructible from a baggage handler perspective... TSA is a whole different level of asshattery.

I can vouch for the coraplast option if Roy won't send you his case. I shipped a few DLG's that way and just accepted the return shipping on the box as it wasn't the cheapest or least time consuming design; I used a wooden frame on the inside but that may not be needed with a sport tube. That being said wood is your friend in compression.

These guys are probably at the higher end of your price range but they'll work with you and custom cut the foam etc. : https://www.advpack.com/

I agree that something that can be opened and easily inspected is better from a TSA standpoint...

I had my own box made to measurement by a case making firm ( http://transitcase.fi ). Material used: 4 mm thick conpearl.
Wanted to have case that had overall dimension less than 150 cm (length, width, height) so that it would go in the cargo hold as normal luggage when using Finnair. Size: 110 long, 26 cm wide, 20 cm high. Post 1105 in Introducing the Vortex 3 thread. Not sure how many planes will fit in, three at least and that is enough for me as I am not in any WC team ;-)
Paid around 250€ for it, got a special prize though thanks to Janne Savolainen.

There are also ready made plastic transport cases, which are more expensive. Transitcase sells Italian made boxes, Explorer and Plaber cases but there are probably similar available in North America. Might be a good alternative, IF you find a case with good dimensions. This might be useable?: https://www.explorercases.com/en/pro...terproof-case/

Anyway, the case should be easily opened and inspected. Makes life easier for everybody.

Hey Eitan...I am travelling with my gear since a long time and I am totally convinced by the Sportube...I built an inner box out of a polyethylene material with air chambers - solid and light
I can get max. 6 planes into the box

Cheers,

Rollo

It's a very good idea that I also had in mind since it is very "cost effective", but I prefer something simpler that I can use everyday (easily open, take out the models and close...
And yes, TSA aer a bunch of thugs! I had my fare share with them

This is exactly what I want, but as I said in the beginning, I can[t find Con-Pearl anywhere in Canada.

But then you (not really, your'e a pilot...) need to pay for oversized baggage, I want to avoid that.
Besides, I want the box to be usable even when I'm just going to fly in my home field.

It seems like Coroplast is something worth looking into... I will do some more research about it

Of course, wood is the easiest but also the heaviest... That is something that I also try to avoid (airport workers tossing it around because it's to heavy)

Around here, coroplast is used for election signs.

Find the losers and get a couple signs from them!

There was a thread a few years back on building a wood framed coroplast box.
