Question

Servo Chatter


Hi Jim,

I have a X24 v1.5 in a 3.1 CompArf 330. Using (2) 5600 7.4v LiPo batteries regulated to 6.0v and (2) DMSS XBUS DFA RG812BX receivers with sub-receivers.
Single JR 8711 servos with 2" arms on each elevator surface, the right one has a constant chatter. I was going to replace the 8711 with a MKS 777A to see if that clears it up.

Any ideas?

Is this just sitting idle, or with an engine or motor running? Try swapping servos elevator ports (so left goes to right and right goes to left). If the chatter follows the swap then the problem is definitely the servo. The X24's servo outputs are insanely precise, and all occur at the same time. ALL of the servos would be chattering if there was a problem with the servo output itself. Be aware though that it seems that MK 777 servos have a problem with gas ignition systems.

Why are you using a regulator? The X24 was designed for the very purpose of getting rid of regulators. You are really defeating the entire purpose of the X24 by using a regulator. If you need 6v for your servos, get rid of the Lipos and use LiFe instead. LiFe is a much better technology anyways, safe to charge in your aircraft (no fire potential ever), faster charge, etc.

Thanks Jim,

I'll switch the elevator leads and see what that yields. Need 6v for the servos so maybe LIFE is a good remedy too. Had not heard that about 777 and ignition systems.

You could also try another system to see if the servo is still affected.
Tests with carbon plates in the firewall or faraday shields are not
recommended for flight but could yield some interesting observations on the ground.
