Completely scratch Avro Vulcan

For a long time I have wanted to build a Vulcan. With winter being such an awful one this year - I have been able to build two ... yes TWO of my fav birds :

DH Mosquito ....

and now the Avro Vulcan.

2826 2200kv motor / prop ~300gr fully sheeted
Additions (wheels, legs, 3D nose, servos, Rx) ~170gr
3S LiPo from 160 - 190gr depending on which needed to balance out.

That makes her ~ 660gr all up ... which given the wing area is not so bad ...

Span 850mm (I did intend 1000mm but in the end made all fit the sheet)
Root chord 430mm incl intake
Wing area ~27sq dm
LOA incl prop boss 770mm
CoG is calculated at 410mm from nose (170mm from wing intake to fuselage joint)

eCalc gives it excellent figures ... taking a 2200 3S LiPo ... 6x4 APC E prop

C rating 9C (means no high power LiPo needed)
Mixed flight time 11mins
Max E Power out 203W
Thrust to weight 1.3 : 1
Pitch speed 118kph
Vertical climb 31kph

After checking and that narrow nose ... revision is to 1500 3S and she has come in at 660gr with all the gear in incl. LiPo ... Gyro ... and fixed U/C ...

Now to find a way to mount my Soloshot Tag on it ...

Thinking to cut a hatch over the CoG and have a mount with velcro ... then hinged hatch with magnet over top.

Today I decided to swap out the LONGGGGGG U/C legs for the shorter Stinger legs supplied with the mounts. This means that the rear prop hits the deck at about 20 deg nose up ....

So taking the suggestion by another ... I fashioned a rear skid hot glued in front of the prop. When the nose lifts and tail sits down on take-off - the skid will hit ground first ... its longitudinal so it should slide ok,

It does mean of course no Vulcan steep climbs from take-off ! At least not until she's clear of the deck !

Finally !!

Cirava 11 May 2019 Vulcan success SS3 A (5 min 43 sec)

Cirava 11 May 2019 Vulcan success (6 min 37 sec)

Ok she goes home broken ... but the concept works and has spurred me on to do a better model ...

Considering larger so I can put retracts and to be honest I think a tractor prop up front to get around that high angle she needs to rotate to on take-off.

The model had to have small prop as a pusher to avoid hitting the deck on rotation ... in the end I needed a wire skid ....

But you really do need to mow your tarmac

Normally we drag an old tractor tyre behind a car ... but last year and this not.

For the Soviet Migs ... it wasn't a problem

My Vulcan has some errors that next will fix ... U/C too close together allowing her to topple to one side ... underpowered due to smaller prop to not strike ground on take-off .... spindly U/C that flex's too much.

I'm toying with just going flat plate wing with box fuselage and tractor prop ... then I can hand launch / not worry about ground strikes etc.
I did toy with idea of twin 50mm EDF's or maybe 4x 30mm's ....

Good show - flew nicely for first time in the air.. First flight is the hardest, for me anyway. Looks like it just ran out of air speed at the end.

Dunno ... I've slowed the video to try and see ... what I remember was bring her round to make a run for the runway ... wind was very light and fickle so landing direction was what I decide ... she just rolled over and dived.

Maybe she was slowing down over the last 100 yards or so and finally just decided enough ? I had moderate throttle on which she had flown in earlier part - but only for a few seconds ...

I'm now building another flat plate version as a second tester .... before I go for a large one ...

I think in terms of building full fuselage / wing form - it has to be large ... in the small size I made - its asking a bit too much ...

Prop in slot with plenty CF spars..

Added longitudinals as the rear flexed too much after cutting the slot ...

Even that didn't cure it - so added vertical shallow bulkhead both sides ..

Thought the 3D exhausts added character ..

Ready to go .. 430gr AUW incl 1800 3S .. 2200kv wth 6x5 ..
